year's end survey

Jan 01, 2013 23:21

I so nearly got this done in time for it to still be 2012.

1.What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
Got engaged. Went to WorldCon.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Set one for sort of the first time, made a stab at it, didn't work out.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes - Nicole made me an aunt twice over.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No one close to me, but close to those around me. Third funeral I've been to for Chris's family in not quite eight years.

5. What countries did you visit?
None.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
A solid career plan.

7. What date(s) from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
9/12/12 - my nephew's birthday.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I didn't really accomplish much this year.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Probably that lack of solid career plan.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I'm sick right now, but nothing major.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Maiden tickets?

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Ben and Katie both passed the bar and got sworn in! And four more states stood up for marriage equality on election night.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
People who committed mass shootings, House Republicans, the NRA . . . .

14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, bills, etc.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? (in chrono order)
Getting engaged. Cranberries concert. Maiden concert. Going to WorldCon/meeting Chicago folks/meeting Seanan McGuire.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2012?
"Dreaming Wide Awake" and "War" by Poets of the Fall, perhaps.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Don't know.
ii. thinner or fatter? Slightly fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer - it'll be nice to be a dual income household again.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Classes, probably. Didn't take any this year. Also, could have stood to have cooked and exercised more the latter half of the year.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Generally less than healthy habits.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Spent 12/23 in Barrington, 12/24 in Sharon, and 12/25 in Greenfield.

21. Did you fall in love in 2012?
No need to fall.

22. How many lovers?
Same guy.

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Hmm. Grimm? Not really sure. (There was a short space in which I was watching three shows while they were all still on the air. That never happens.)

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
I actually read a lot of good books this year! C.J. Cherryh's Downbelow Station, perhaps? William Gibson's Virtual Light? Sarah Rees Brennan's Unspoken? (Perhaps Neuromancer should win, although it's not my favourite of Gibson's, since it did spawn an entire genre and introduce a word to English vocabulary.) I am spoilt for choice.

27. What were your greatest musical discoveries?
Poets of the Fall!

28. What did you want and get?
A change of mind on the relative benevolence of matrimony.

29. What did you want and not get?
The Bella Morte show in Cambridge was canceled night-of because their van was in the shop, which was pretty disappointing.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Didn't see too many films this year. The Hunger Games, perhaps? Jennifer Lawrence was amazing.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
30. Had dinner at the Asgard with Chris, Clare, Sam, Peter, and Katie S. (Also was the victim of a diluvian downpour - this year it rained on my birthday and not on Chris's. What's with that?)

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Chris finding a job.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
I'm trying to get back to my gothy roots to feel more true to myself, despite the nay-saying trio of Chris, Mum, and Sascha. I sadly acquiesced to not wearing black at the wedding.

34. What kept you sane?
Discipline and hope, I suppose.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Ever and always, Bruce Dickinson. And this year I developed an author-crush on Seanan McGuire.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The election, of course.

37. Whom did you miss?
Sascha, out on the west coast. Katie, in various locales to the south.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
My nephew!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012:
I'm not really sure I learned any significant lessons this year.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Should I be walking back or forward?/ Is the wait enough to make you go down on your knees?/ Maybe we'll be all right in a long run that seems like heaven/ Like hearing silence far away and lifting high
