I have too many* clothes. How does one know this?

clothes= uncountable noun/undefined number

clothing= countable noun/can be defined with "x pieces of clothing".

for an uncountable noun, use "much".... for a countable noun, use "many"

Yes... "clothes" is a group. But you're not telling me anything new here... People still use "too many clothes". Is this a known recurrent mistake?
