Being talked to like he's stupid
His middle name. He thinks it's dumb
Snow. He's only seen it a couple times up close, but he's pretty sure it's the dumbest kind of weather there could be
History: Jacob Bratts has known from a young age that he was not going to have a good life. His family lives in a bad neighbourhood, His father is angry when he's drunk (which is all the time), and his mother just drifts around the house like a ghost, cigarette constantly hanging from her mouth. She rarely speaks, not even when Jake's dad hits him. He doesn't bear him up or anything; just a quick backhand so that it hurts like a bitch but doesn't leave a mark. He used to hit Jake's brother too, but he's big enough to fight back now, so Jake is the center of anger. He suspects his parents don't love him at all.
Jake never wanted to be a criminal. But his older brother Tony was in a gang, and you don't say no to Tony. The first time Tony put a brick of cocaine in his backpack and sent him over to Lenny's house, Jake was eleven. He didn't even really understand what he was carrying. He ran drugs for Tony for seven months without incident. He saw some things an eleven year old probably shouldn't, but hey, it's a tough world, get used to it. Then, when he was twelve he got picked up by the cops. Tony told him to rat on the person he was supposed to be delivering drugs for, so he did. He got probation. And Strike One.
Tony didn't make him run drugs while he was on probation, but he did introduce him to doing drugs. At first, it was just weed and mushrooms, and other non-addicting things. But soon it turned into coke. Jake got hooked easily, just around the time his probation ended. At first it was easy to get more coke from Tony, but then Tony started insisting that he run drugs across town before he would give Jake his own ration. When Jake was 16 he got picked up by the cops on the way home from a drug run. He wouldn't have been in trouble, since he had already dropped off the drugs, except Tony had shoved a gun into his waistband before he left, because the place was "dangerous". Bam, concealed weapon charge. This time he got six months in juvi. And Strike Two.
Jake cleaned up while he was in juvi. Coke withdrawal was the most painful thing he'd ever gone through, but he made it. When he got out, Tony expected him to start running drugs again, but Jake had had enough. He stood up to Tony for the first time in his life. Unfortunately, he did it while walking down the street, and when things got physical, he pushed Tony. Tony fell and cracked his head open. The cops happened to be nearby. Because Tony was bleeding Jake got charged with aggravated assault. Strike Three. The judge he got seemed to realize that Tony was the bad influence, so he shipped Jake off to Live Positively.
Personality: Jake is acutally kind of shy. He's never sure what to say to people he's just met, and tends to over think things in his head before he says them out loud, sometimes to the point where he decides not to speak at all. He's never really sure how much about himself he should reveal to people, mostly because he's never really had anyone he could trust before. He doesn't know what it feels like to have someone you can count on, so his expectations for new people he meets are pretty low. This also makes him very twitchy, and he tends to flinch at loud noises, and being touched.
Jake knows doing cocaine was a mistake. Being strung out on drugs during most of high school ruined his chances of ever getting out of the ghetto. There was no way he could have paid for an education himself, but maybe if he had worked really hard he could have got a scholarship. He's not naturally book smart, but he's got perseverance. Although, his weakness is the perfect sunny day. He can't resist spending at least an hour in the sun when it's beautiful outside. And since he lives in Florida, that may have impeded his studies, if he had cared about them.
Jake has suspected he might be bisexual for a while now, but when you live in the ghetto and have a brother like Tony, you don't talk about that kind of thing, and you especially don't act on it.

Jake sat on his bed fiddling with the sleeve of his sweater. He was nervous as hell to meet his new roommate. This was someone he'd never met before that he was going to have to live with for the foreseeable future. Plus, they're a criminal. Jake knew that he was technically a criminal too, but it seemed different. He had been forced into his crimes by his brother, whereas he suspected most of the people here led lives of crime by choice. What if he was rooming with a klepto? Would his stuff constantly be going missing? Or what if his roommate liked to stab people. Should he be worried about shanks made out of a toothbrushes? He shook his head to try and make himself stop thinking about it. His roommate wasn't necessarily a bad person. He should wait until they had at least met before he started make judgments.
The door opened and he jumped slightly. He hoped his new roommate hadn't seen. He stood up and stuck out his hand. "Um, hi. I'm Jake." He wasn't sure whether he should smile or not, so he settled for a half one, and hoped it didn't look like a smirk.

I'm almost looking forward to being here. Almost. Except, who knows what all these other kids did to get in here. I could be locked up in here with a bunch of murderers for all I know. But it's better than being around Tony, carrying around drugs for his stupid gang. I don't know how they expect me to change though. I already didn't want to do all the stuff I got busted for. If I had a choice, I wouldn't have done them at all. So how am I supposed to get better?
