"What does it feed on?"
"The literature is vague," Ginko said, carefully pushing the mushi into a bottle. Its frond-like appendages beat gently against the air, against the thick walls of glass. "It's hard to tell, since it lives in the blood. But the infected seldom show signs of illness -- if anything, they get healthier -- so it can't be anything vital. Some scholars even suggest that it might not be a true mushi--"
"Something closer to animal life, then? I mean, if even I can see it..."
Adashino's attempt at scientific curiosity could not mask the triumph in his voice. Ginko smiled to himself, corking the bottle and handing it over. "Quite the opposite."
"Hm?" Adashino said, holding the mushi up to the sunlight. The bottle gleamed as it caught the rays, and the soft glow of its contents intensified into brilliance.
"You'd know better than I would, Adashino-sensei. Don't the old stories tell of creatures even more ancient than mushi?"
