Summary: Yookyung's peaceful life is changed by a witch hopeful.
Note(s): Prompt: magic.

Yookyung tilts her head up and is met with neon lights and a powerful wind that smashes snowflakes against her face. She looks around to discover that she's on a side street, standing by the steps of a potion shop of some sort.

She can already feel her face freeze. The shop exudes warmth and before she realizes it, she has opened the door. The flashing signs and bright city lights are replaced with the soft lights of incandescent lamps. The mix of different scented candles should probably make her dizzy.

"You didn't grow a beard," the girl at the counter says.

"Excuse me?" Yookyung stares at her for a moment, then closes the door carefully and steps further inside.

"I'm Eunji," the girl says with a sheepish smile.

Yookyung nods and looks around the tiny little shop as if searching for something in particular. She wanders to a stand full of strangely shaped jars.

"Make a wish," Eunji says after Yookyung has inspected the jars for a while.

Yookyung looks up in thought. She looks at the ornament in the ceiling, then around the shop again, and there's a strange familiarity to everything she sees. She finally goes to the counter with a few jars labeled as pixie tears. "I don't know what to wish for."

Eunji sighs and takes a look at the jars Yookyung has just laid on the counter. "These will be 28 300 won."

Yookyung fumbles through her pockets, realizing she may not have any money on her. After a moment of panic she finds a purse with just enough cash to cover her purchases. "I wish for a shopping bag," she jokes.

Eunji twirls her fingers and amidst a glittering cloud, a small blue shopping bag appears.

Yookyung's brows furrow and her eyes widen as she stares at the shopping bag, sitting at the counter looking perfectly ordinary. She turns her gaze to Eunji, who winks and then proceeds to put the shady goods in the shady bag.

Yookyung realizes that it's New Year's Eve. She thanks for the items, takes her winter cap from the rack and heads out for the subway station.

From the corner of her eye Yookyung sees Eunji, who's standing by the subway door. Eunji gazes at her every time they reach a new stop. Yookyung is pretty sure she's following her.

"You could have sat in front of me and at least tried to not look so suspicious," Yookyung says when she and Eunji get off the metro.

After they have rushed past the herds of people at the station, something falls from Eunji's bag. A page neatly ripped from a notebook.

"Oh, the note I stole from you," Eunji says as she picks up the note and hands it to Yookyung.

"How to free a genie," Yookyung reads. As she recognizes her own handwriting, she remembers.

-A few months earlier-

How to free a genie, Yookyung writes in her planner. She hasn't used it for a while. Naeun and Hayoung would fill it with silly doodles when they still visited her regularly. Now Naeun lives in Shanghai and Hayoung just doesn't have any spare time from high school. The shop hasn't had any customers in months and as Yookyung doesn't have a master, she's bound to the shop and can't go anywhere.

Trying to free oneself is strictly against the genie code, but everyone tries it at least once and a few years back Yookyung did some research of her own. She taps the pen against her lips, pondering how she should go about her scheme. A part of her wants to give up already. Nobody falls for genie tricks anymore, and she's never been the mischievous type anyway.

The door opens and a human girl she's never seen before enters the shop. "Good morning!" Her eyes disappear into a wide smile and Yookyung's heart flutters a bit.

Yookyung follows the girl with her eyes as she walks around the store, looking at everything, occasionally picking some things up for closer inspection.

When she finally walks up to the counter, Yookyung decides that she can forgive herself for being eager if everything goes well. "I'm a genie," she says with her best customer service smile. "This kit from Genie Works will help you accept our existence." She takes a box under the counter and hands it out to the puzzled girl. "Feel free to start making wishes whenever you're ready." She bites her lip in excitement.

The girl nods as she takes the kit. She thanks for it courteously and begins to open it, then suddenly puts it back on the counter. Yookyung feels her heart clench at the thought of the girl leaving. What was she even thinking, introducing herself to a normal human like that.

The girl looks at her again with that sunny smile of hers, although this time with a hint of cheekiness. "Oh, I know genies, I'm not a complete newbie!" After a moment of silence, she laughs. "I'm Jung Eunji. How can I make you mine?"

Yookyung can only stare at her.

Eunji scratches the back of her head and laughs again. "Ah, that probably sounded bad."

Yookyung gives a small giggle. "There's a guidebook in there, actually," she points at the kit, "but I suppose you can wish for me to be your genie, if you'd like. There isn't really a notable risk of anyone stealing me from you."

Eunji nods and folds her arms with a serious expression. "The times have changed." She sighs, a smile almost curving her lips.

"Indeed," Yookyung says slowly, skeptical as to how much Eunji knows about the magical world and why she knows about it in the first place.

Eunji is excitedly flipping pages in a spell book with Yookyung sulking beside her. While she knows enough about witches to understand that Eunji wasn't born magical, the only kind of magic she's really familiar with is genie magic. Yet Eunji, as her mistress, insists on learning from the suspicious spell book that has been tucked in the shop's darkest corner for decades. With Yookyung's help, she says, but Yookyung knows so frustratingly little!

Eunji has come all the way from Busan to find a witch who would take her as an apprentice. She's staying at a house she wished for herself, although she spends more and more time at the shop every day. While she hasn't exactly quit her search and settled for Yookyung to be her mentor, she does seem quite content despite Yookyung's complete lack of expertise.

What baffles Yookyung even more is that Eunji seldom makes any wishes. Yookyung doesn't know much about her but she can already think of some wishes that would make life easier. Giving suggestions would be against the genie etiquette, of course.

The city breathes in magnificent fall colors, the sun shines on Yookyung and warms her face, and the wind gently brushes her hair. She lets out an exasperated sigh as she finds herself carrying Eunji's things to the shop.

"I thought there was an entrance to the magical realm in here." Eunji plays with the veil that's separating the living area from the shop. Yookyung shakes her head and carries the bags and suitcase behind the veil without a word.

Yookyung has dedicated one of the walls to pictures of her friends. That girl really loves to take pictures, she thinks as she realizes half of the photos are of Naeun.

"Your girlfriend is so cute," Eunji coos, pointing at Naeun and Yookyung in embarrassing Halloween costumes.

Yookyung frowns, at both the picture and the comment. "She's not my girlfriend."

"Don't worry about it, I'm very modern!" Eunji grins.

"Look, she's an important friend. Not a lot of humans know what I am." Her expression softens as Eunji's turns more serious. "I guess you could call her my previous mistress."

Eunji nods, deep in thought. Her face then lights up. "Can I have my own wall one day?"

She might be serious about taking over a wall, Yookyung thinks when Eunji puts her camera in her bag with a big smile. For the past week they have been going out every day to see, in Eunji's words, everything that's worth seeing in Seoul, snapping some memories along the way. They have also tried to track down some witches but to no avail.

"Everyone is trying to be a normal human. You won't find traditional magical folk so easily, not even witches," they're told by a sympathetic fairy.

As night falls, both are too tired to even walk home.

"I wish we had more energy."

"I'm sorry but that's not possible," Yookyung huffs.

Eunji wishes them home in defeat.

"It's better to continue tomorrow, anyway." Yookyung yawns and starts changing into her pajamas in a corner of their bedroom. She mentally hits herself for every glance at Eunji, who's changing at the other end of the room. Stop acting like a pervert.

Eunji throws her shirt off and Yookyung quickly turns away, blushing furiously. "Yookyung-ah! You can stop creeping in the corner! Jeez, we're both girls, what's the problem, really..."

"I'm shy!" And trying to ignore the goddamn perfect girl, with perfect little curves.

They're burning jasmine and vanilla scented candles. After an energy-draining week (both magical and regular stamina has been used unsparingly), Yookyung has allowed herself a shameless Saturday in pajamas. Eunji is enjoying hot chocolate and marshmallows, her cheeks flushed red, hair on a messy bun and worn-out cartoon shirt tucked in fleece pants. "I've learned a lot about this city, although I didn't originally mean to stay for good."

"You didn't?"

Eunji hums, poking Yookyung's leg with her toe. "I still want to see the lights at Seoul Tower on New Year's Eve."

"I'll keep that in mind."

Hayoung is in love.

"Well, maybe."

"You're spending so much time with your sweetheart that you can't even call me." Yookyung puffs her cheeks and taps Hayoung's nose. "You better be in love!"

"Young love." Eunji lets out a deep sigh, staring into distance.

"You've experienced it, haven't you?" Hayoung smiles.

"Nah."

Yookyung cocks an eyebrow. "How come you acted so nostalgic, then?"

"I've wanted to experience it."

"I can relate to that!" Hayoung pouts. "Well, I hope you can experience it soon."

Eunji only smirks in response.

"I found this from a street corner," Eunji explains as she carries a potted plant inside. "I can cast spells on it!"

"What kind of spells are you going to try on that dead flower?" Yookyung eyes Eunji and the plant suspiciously. Eunji chuckles and wiggles her eyebrows. The spell book is open on the floor, as it always is. They now have many other spell books as well but this one has remained Eunji's favorite.

Under Yookyung's watchful eye she marks the pages with spells that might work with the plant. She talks about the mysterious descriptions enthusiastically, her elbow resting on Yookyung's shoulder. A moment later she shifts away as she becomes more immersed in a spell called The Curse of a Thousand Years. Yookyung leans closer to Eunji and almost presses her lips on her ear. "Don't even think about that one."

Eunji blushes and lightly punches Yookyung's arm. "I wouldn't try a spell with a name like that. And it only has a strange riddle for a description. I'm not crazy."

Some of the spells turn out to have side effects, such as firing right back at Eunji instead of affecting the plant. The coloring spell, a favorite amongst kindergartners, works the best - although it sometimes changes the color of Eunji's fingers. "I could get used to having rainbow hands."

Eunji fiddles Yookyung's notebook in her hands. "Can I use this?"

"Sure. Don't you want your own, though?"

"I want this one," she beams, leafing through. She suddenly stops. "How to free a genie..." She looks up at Yookyung with a frown. "I can't just wish for you to be free, then?"

Yookyung shakes her head. The door opens and Hayoung enters the shop, waving her hand.

"How have you survived being trapped in here, anyway?" Eunji continues after greeting Hayoung.

"But imagine being trapped in a bottle," Hayoung says, to which Yookyung nods vehemently. Eunji can probably guess that she's not going to get anything else, so she allows the subject to be changed to Hayoung and whether she would be an appropriate test subject for some potion experiments.

Lately, Eunji has been gaining confidence in her spell-casting abilities. She's also conducting some secret business - which can't be good - and she has managed to keep everything a mystery. "Well, it's time for you to leave the witch to her work." She pushes Yookyung out of the shop.

"Why? It's freezing cold, too," Yookyung whines. Swirls of snow dance around her legs as the door mercilessly closes.

-Present-

The rest of the note is in Eunji's handwriting. "You used a combination spell? That's crazy!"

Eunji grabs Yookyung's arm and starts walking towards the Seoul Tower. "Hey, it's not like anything terrible happened, aside from short-time memory loss."

"You became a genie," Yookyung shrieks.

Eunji gives her a confused look, then bursts into laughter. "Yeah, I kind of like it. Awesome powers, and I get to call you my mistress."

"I don't have any gloves," Eunji says when they're under the Seoul Tower. She puts her hand in Yookyung's pocket, leans closer to her, and rests her head on her shoulder.

"I could have wished for some gloves. How can you go outside in this weather without them, anyway?" Yookyung flusters, hoping she sounds half as cool as she tries to.

"I was in a hurry to catch my mistress!"

"Please don't call me that."

"You're no fun."

"But you know, don't you," Yookyung whispers after a while, "that as a genie you're bound to me. You can't get away from me and you have to fulfill all of my wishes."

"I like being with you and I want to make your wishes come true." After enduring Yookyung's cold stare for a moment, she roughly pats her back. "Give me more credit! I didn't become a genie. The spell did just what I wanted it to do." She smiles heartily. "You're still a genie but you're not bound to anyone. You're your own genie." Yookyung blinks a few times. Eunji wraps her arms around her. "I can leave whenever I want, however far I want, and never return! Does that make you happy?"

"Of, of course it does." She looks up. "How far would you like to go, though?" She tilts her head back down and gets a surprise nuzzle. Her face heats up.

"Busan."

"So..." They're so close they can feel each other's breaths. "Why did you really come to Seoul? Aren't the witches here known to not accept any human apprentices?"

"Well, the witches in Busan are notorious for treating their apprentices as slaves." Eunji moves away, looking a bit nervous. "And I've got a confession to make." She hesitates for a moment. "The first time I came to Seoul was last winter. The coldest in decades, right? I got robbed by a gang of girls that were probably younger than me. They even took my jacket and boots." Yookyung puts her hand on Eunji's shoulder. "I wandered here looking like a bum. A girl, who I'm pretty sure was your previous mistress, wished that I had something warm to wear. And then you," Eunji smiles at Yookyung, "just waved your hand and the wish came true."

"How did you get home?"

"It was a struggle." She shrugs it off. "But even then, I thought I wanted to return here and meet you again."

"I wish we were at the Busan Tower." Yookyung waves her hand but nothing happens. She frowns at her palm. "My powers might be very limited." Eunji's expression darkens. "Don't worry about it. I've always been kind of weak."

"Don't say that."

"Well, this is good. People tend to only grow unhappier when they get all of their wishes fulfilled."

"That's true. Oh, and we can still be a power duo! There's nothing scarier than a self-taught witch, right?" She puts on a mischievous smile, possibly the most suspicious expression Yookyung has ever seen on anyone - and she's seen plenty of genies. "And I have the coolest girlfriend in the magical world."

Yookyung shakes her head but doesn't fight the smile forming on her lips.
