It’s an hour past the time Ara originally planned to stay - an hour past twelve to be exact - and she’s sitting at the bar alone. She’s been playing with her phone for the last two hours, trying not to look like friendless loser while compulsively checking her empty inbox, sneaking a glance once in awhile at Yoonjo and Yooyoung making out once again behind a giant pillar in the quieter section of the bar.

She desperately hopes that she won’t have to drive two intoxicated fools again, a shudder running down her spine as she recalls the last time that happened. She had been pulled over by a cop while the two continued to make sarcastic comments giggle incoherently in the background as she received a ticket (Yoonjo making the said comments and Yooyoung giggling profusely to be exact). Ara contemplates for a moment, wondering if she could ditch the two and drive home by herself before dismissing the idea and cursing herself for being such a pushover.

“Hey,” Yoonjo slides into the stool next to her with a content look, hair a mess and her shirt ruffled and sliding down her shoulder. Yooyoung is equally scruffy as she sits next to Yoonjo, but at least she has the decency to look embarrassed about it.

Ara rolls her eyes, nudging the intoxicated girl with her shoulder. Why she hangs out with Yoonjo she’ll never know. How Yoonjo ever got a girlfriend as pretty and kind as Yooyoung she’ll never understand either.

“That blond bartender was totally checking you out,” Yoonjo giggles, her breath stinking of alcohol.

Maybe it’s the sentence itself or the strong smell of alcohol that jolts her out of her thoughts, but her face flushes almost immediately as she catches the sight of an attractive blond behind the counter looking at her quite openly. Immediately, her eyes travel down to stare at the black screen of her phone, suddenly feeling a lot more self-conscious then she should. Yoonjo smirks, slapping down some money on the counter as she orders some kind of cocktail that Ara’s never heard before.

The blond waitress nods in their direction, flashing an adorable smile in their direction before setting off to mix the drinks. Yoonjo gets excited by herself and squeals, shaking Ara’s shoulders in her drunken frenzy.

“She smiled at you! She smiled at you!”

And in that moment, Ara can’t help but think that maybe the blond had smiled at her, and maybe the cute bartender could be interested in her.

Then she realizes maybe the bartender (the very cute one, may she add) wasn’t gay.

Yoonjo frets a little longer, her hands running through Ara’s hair gently, tucking away the wandering strands and dabbing any of the smudged eyeliner with a strange precaution, the latter completely preoccupied in her thoughts. She stops only when Yooyoung shifts, coughing softly as if to direct the attention of her girlfriend back to her.

“Unnie,” Yooyoung whines in an aegyo-filled voice that would normally make Ara cringe but since it was Yooyoung she found it irresistibly adorable.

Obviously Yoonjo thinks the same as she stops playing with Ara’s hair to pat Yooyoung’s cheek, smiling cheekily, “Wait a moment, I’m trying to help get our dear Ara laid.”

A snort of surprise and indignation sounds from her as she shouts, “I’m perfectly capable of getting laid without any help from you! I’ve just, uh…”

She trails off immediately, realizing that she had shouted than she originally intended too and had unintentionally attracted the gaze of the blond bartender she was trying not to look stupid in front of. Gritting her teeth, she turns toward Yoonjo with a sickening sweet smile, the latter red in the face from stifling her laughter (though unsuccessfully).

“Shin Yoonjo, I am going to kill you.”

“You’ll thank me later,” Yoonjo winks, whisking away the car keys along with Yooyoung who at least waved goodbye and left some cash for the drinks and a way back home.

Ara’s eyes were double the size by the time the two escaped, hand outstretched comically in their direction, “Yah! You two, get back here! I don’t-“

She’s cut off by a glass sliding her direction, its colorful contents swishing against the sides as the equally bright umbrella swirls around the edge. The blond bartender is suddenly a lot closer, smiling at her, encouraging her to take a drink. Ara mentally notes that she’s a lot cuter close up. She suddenly regrets never listening to Yoonjo when she would burst into random rants and relationship advice since they really did work.

“I didn’t spike it or anything,” the blond chuckles. “Besides, wouldn’t want alcohol to hamper your mission to get laid.”

Ara flushes, hand gripping the glass harder until her knuckles turns white. She can feel the blood rushing up her neck and all the way up to ears, coloring her pale skin an unflattering red. “I-, no, that’s not, you see-“

Her ears are practically on fire as the chuckling blond saves her from further embarrassment.

“I’m Alice.”

“O-Oh! That’s a cool name, unique. Are you a foreigner? You know, because your blond hair, but you speak Korean so well…” Ara stops, realizing she’s rambling, and for the nth time that night, she wants to go and bash her head against a wall. I need to get laid, is all she thinks as she buries her face into her hands, fingers spread just enough to let her see.

Alice is practically doubled over, laughing at the mortified brunette. It takes a good while before she can utter some kind of comforting word without chuckling, but by then Ara’s looks like she’s about ready to crawl into a hole and die.

“No, I assure you I’m 100% Korean, never been out of the country before actually. The boss here just thought my Korean name, Song Juhee, wasn’t eye-catching enough,” Alice sends her another smile that sets her heart racing again and Ara swears that if any more blood rushes into her cheeks, her face will probably explode. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Yoo Ara.”

*

Ara’s back in the same place for the fifth time this month, but this time she’s alone.

Each time she had lingered as long as she could, Alice never failing to come and offer some kind of new concoction of alcoholic beverages.

Maybe because the concoction was especially strong this time she recklessly starts talking, or maybe it’s because she’s so infatuated with Alice that she can’t control what she says. Either way, she ends up blurting out:

“Are you gay?”

Alice is clearly dumbfounded, jaw hanging loosely. Her eyes flash with a spark of uneasiness but it’s gone so fast that Ara wonders if she made it up. However, stripe of color paints her face as her fingers nervously fumble, teeth gnawing the inside of her cheek until she tastes the metallic taste of blood. Just what the hell was she doing? This was so stupid and maybe Alice was just being nice to her and maybe she just completely ruined any chances of being with her and- and- and-

The blond clears her throat, throwing Ara out of her trance before giving her a side glance.

“My shift ends in 30 minutes, meet me by the front entrance.”

And that’s how Ara was unceremoniously thrust out of the bar.

*

It’s below freezing and Ara has her back against the side wall of the brick building, waiting for Alice to appear. Luckily there’s no snow anymore and most of the wind has gone down, so it seems like she won’t freeze to death. Well, at least she hopes she doesn’t, but she can feel her fingers and face slowly getting numb anyways. Burrowing deeper into her jacket, Ara leans her head against the brick wall and lets out a sigh.

“You know you’re going to catch a cold standing there.”

Alice suddenly appears out of nowhere, her expression guarded.

Ara quickly bounces off the wall, biting her lower lip. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-“

“Are you gay?”

“I asked you first!”

Alice raises an eyebrow, the corners of her mouth twitching as she expected an answer.

The sudden question had caught her off guard, her mouth going dry as she fumbles, trying to get some kind of coherent word out of her. “I uh, no, wait, I mean yes,” she stutters, unable to meet the blonde’s steady gaze. She can feel Alice’s eyes burning a hole into her and it sends a shiver down her body as she rocks from heel to toe. “I-I don’t know, well I dated a boy named Baekho for awhile, but I didn’t really fin him that attractive so we broke up and uh,” she was rambling - really, really, badly - but Alice gives her an amused half-smile, half-smirk (that is so unexplainably attractive) and she quickly stops the torrent of words gushing out of her mouth, feeling more like an idiot than ever before.

Alice is laughing, her shoulders shaking in mirth as she tries her best to stifle the giggles, face red with the effort. Her face contorts into a strange expression, tongue sticking out the side of her mouth, as she tries to become serious. She takes a step forward and Ara stands against the wall, eyes closed expectantly.

Ara likes to believe their first kiss was a sweet one, a fairy tale-like kiss.

However, it wasn’t.

The laughter dies too soon and Alice pulls her in too quickly that they end up bumping their foreheads together before their lips can even touch. Ara blushes, embarrassed, as she rubs the sore sport on her forehead, eyes downcast to avoid Alice’s. Little did she know the blond was as equally red as her, cheeks splashed with color.

Ara glances upwards, her frown quickly turning into a nervous giggle as she meets the older girl’s eyes. Alice laughs as well, her voice quivering more from anxiety than mirth.

“Try again?” Alice asks quietly, almost shyly, a sheepish smile on her face.

Ara nods, a determined smile setting itself on her face as she leans forward, awkwardly placing her lips against Ara’s. The kiss is slow and awkward and Ara feels her body trembling underneath the softness of the blond’s lips, the taste of Alice mixing in with the sharp tang of alcohol; and all she thinks is that it’s a lot better than the first one.

The kiss ends too fast for Ara’s liking but then they end up kissing a lot more, each better than the rest.

They stay outside; kissing again and again until Ara’s sure she can’t feel her fingers anymore.
