SYAC - Mistakes by *TomPreston on deviantART

Okay. Sigh.

What frustrates me about popular artists who post this kind of shit is that they'll get hundreds of comments that reply with artists trying to backtrack themselves in order to feel justified about the way they draw. "I like anime, but I've been trying to draw more Western influence." NO. KNOCK ( Read more... )

I'm a big ol Naruto, One Piece, Uzumaki, and Yu Yu Hakusho fan m'self. Also I'm asian, so I've always found it pretty dumb when anyone talks about all cartoon art from asia like it's bad for you hahahaa

Its really dumb, in my opinion. I also hate when people say that artists don't learn shit by using expressions from anime? Uh, okay. I mean, you get the same thing happening in cartoons all the time - lets say, for an example, a character's eyes popping out or a character's jaw dropping so much that their tongue rolls out. Okay, because THAT happens in real life.

I'm actually surprised you're into anime, your art doesn't really show it? BUT SEE this is what I'm talking about. Your obviously inspired by anime (right?) but you learn from life too... so liking and learning from anime isn't a bad thing.

Wow, hello ramble.

YEAH I've grown up on shounen manga and it's part of my blood- I still spend much of my time trolling Japanese fanart sites and reading doujinshi haha. In my experience, most people don't see the manga influence in my work unless they're long time manga nerds themselves.

Haha yeah it's stupid to attribute all bad qualities to anime.... I pesronally don't tend to enjoy western influenced artists that copy Disney faces.... All Disney faces tend to be the same after a while and have very little bearing on real expressions. The thing that people need to understand is just that you can't ONLY be influenced by other artists and expect to be good. There has to be a great deal of thought, invention, synthesis of information, and understanding, and that's what young artists don't get, I think.

*lurking pony fan is lurking*

I totally agree with you. Art should be an expression of what you love. Be it fanart, original character art. Be is western style or anime.

No one should have to be told to be ashamed of their art. I think it's the same with writing too. I'm fairly certain some people must think me a bit silly for writing fan fiction at my age. But I don't care because the fan fiction makes me happy. And it's not like I'm not working on my own original works anyways.

Art is nothing without passion behind it. Part of passion is doing what you love. In visual arts OR writing.
