Yes, you've got existential import on the nose. It seems perfectly natural to us, of course, that "some" implies "at least one existing," especially since we grew up with predicate logic, but I'm fascinated that there was a time when that wasn't considered obvious at all.

There are a number of syllogisms that were considered valid in medieval days that aren't now simply because of existential import, namely, those with universal premises and a particular conclusion. "Darapti" (AAI-3) comes to mind.

I think you're right about Holmes dismissing it, and about why he would do so.
