I SO agree with you! I LOVED Sylphiel in the Slayers and I'm actually trying to piece together a cosplay of her. And then in Next when she mastered the Dragon Slave? My love of her doubled!
I mean, Filia is also a favorite character of mine, but I wouldn't have minded if Sylphiel had a bit part at least. I mean, they give her such character growth and then dump her? What the hell?!
Sylphiel never appears in the series again after NEXT in either the novels, the manga or the anime. Why? Frankly, because her role in the story is finished. She's used as a catalyst not just to explain what's happening in Sairaag with both Copy Rezo and Phibrizzo, but she's also used as a device to make Lina aware of her growing feelings for Gourry. By the end of NEXT, there's acceptance on both parties that Lina's going to be the one who ends up with Gourry and it's clear that Gourry only has eyes for Lina. Sylphiel knows she can't compete with Lina's place in Gourry's heart. Her character has reached her goals - which is mainly to get revenge for what happened to her father and to Sairaag.
Pretty much. It's the same reason Martina does not appear asside from Next, and why Phil only has what passes for a cameo in Try.
Plus, Filia is needed for the story arc as a motivator. IIRC, Milgasia (the dragon from Next) fulfils that role in the novels, but I haven't gotten to that point yet.

Yea, I love Sylphiel too, shes such a sweety! Didn't notice too much she wasn't in the other season XD; I figured she just stayed home!
And yea, Filia is still awesome. Her dragon form never ceases to fill me with joy.
