Roses at home-5

William led Kate to the dance floor. The live band was on break and a DJ was spinning tracks of old. Just as they found an open spot on the floor, a new song came on. Trumpets blared and then a deep, sensuous voice came over the speakers.

I’ve got the world on a string, sitting on a rainbow.
Got the string around my finger. What a world, what a life! I’m in love.

Kate threw her head back and smiled. She adored Frank Sinatra. And William took notice. Without notice he spun her around and they began dancing. They moved to and fro, in circles, swaying to the beat. He held in one hand, her right hand. And in his other, her lower back. And Kate had wrapped her arm around his back.

He lowered his head slightly, so his lips brushed her cheek. He sang along to the song softly.

I gotta song that I sing, I can make the rainbow,
Anytime I move my finger. Lucky me, can’t you see? I’m in love.

Kate laughed softly, and moved her body closer to his. She felt warm and comfortable. Her ankle did not bother her at all. She felt lighter than feathers and wasn’t sure if her feet were actually touching the ground. The truth was, her heels never touched the ground. She simply danced on her toes. William spun her around again and pulled her in closer. Kate closed her eyes and hummed the song with William. She opened them again to see Marie and Nelson dancing close by. Marie gave her a wink and danced away.

Kate smiled again. She couldn’t stop smiling. The day was beautiful. Marie was married and happy. And Kate was the very opposite of alone. She was wrapped up in his arms. And he loved Frank Sinatra. Her smile grew as he continued to sing in her ear. The song was coming to an end, and without thinking twice about it, Kate turned her head slightly and kissed his cheek.

The band was reassembling on the stage. “Let’s get something to drink,” he whispered in her ear. Reluctantly, she pulled away and took his waiting hand. They walked towards a table, or at least Kate assumed they did. Her mind was still dancing and in her ears was William, not Frank, singing softly. With eyes half closed, and humming to herself, she followed him and sat down. “I’ll be right back,” and he went to find some drinks.

Kate turned and watched him walk away. She was sitting, but her heart was flying. It had grown wings, and was fluttering. It shimmied through the room, and danced around William, growing more excited by the energy in his eyes.

He returned quickly with two flutes of champagne. Kate was sure she needed no drink to raise her spirits. Any higher, and her spirit might just leave forever to join the heavens in their eternal dance in the sky.

“Thank you,” she said taking a glass from William. She had no idea where the voice came from because she was sure she was too breathless to talk. The energy inside him was calling to her and she could hear him. She longed to be in him arms again.

Before they drank however, Nelson and Marie had come over to their table.

“Well you two look like you’re having a grand time,” Marie smiled at Kate. Kate jumped up and hugged her best friend.

“Oh Marie,” she said, tears welling her eyes. “Congratulations! I’m so happy for you.” She hugged Nelson as well before sitting down again.

“Here you are Marie,” William handed her his drink. “I’ll go get more drinks.”

“Ah, yes!” Nelson stood up. “I think I’ll join you.” And the two men walked away, heads bowed in conversation.

“So Kate, why exactly did you disappear?” Marie asked as soon as they were out of earshot.

“I can’t remember really.” Kate was quiet for a moment. “I was overwhelmed with emotions and I found myself wanders towards the willows. Next thing I know, I’ve fallen, hurt myself, and then William found me and brought me back.”

Marie opened her mouth to say something but the boys had returned with more drinks. Everyone toasted the newlyweds and the conversation turned to the exotic honeymoon ahead, in Tahiti. Kate grew bored of the conversation quickly and her attention returned to the dance floor.

Nelson’s aunt and uncle were dancing. They were an elderly couple, and were moving slowly to their own rhythm. Swaying softly to the music, their eyes never left each other. Kate smiled, watching them in their own world. She hadn’t noticed Marie and Nelson leave the table to mingle with other guests.

Kate did however; notice a warm hand on her shoulder. It slid across her collarbone while another hand made the same but opposite journey. She leaned back, into his chest. He breathed softly and nuzzled her ear with his nose. “Shall we dance again?” He whispered into her ear. His breath tickled her to her bone. She turned her body around to meet his. His hands dropped to her waist and his eyes met hers. Kate allowed her right arm to fall across his shoulders, and her hand played idly with his hair.

“There are other things we could do,” she said back. She laid a soft kiss on his cheek, her eyelashes teasing his face. Her left hand rested on his chest.

He gazed at her, barely blinking, barely breathing. He could only follow his instincts at this point. And so he leaned in and kissed her softly. One of his hands remained on her waist, and the other traveled up slowly to her shoulder blade. She leaned into him, deepening the kiss. It was over as quickly as it had happened.

“Let’s dance,” she whispered. She looked into his eyes and had no desire to get up. But a wedding reception was no place for this behavior. He stood up slowly and offered his hand. She took it and they returned to the dance floor. Out of the corner of her eye, Kate saw Marie scamper away from the DJ. Before she could even wonder what was going on, piano sounds came from the speaker.

“Unforgettable, that’s what you are,” William whispered with the song in Kate’s ear. The DJ (and perhaps, Marie) had selected Nat King and Natalie Cole’s duet of Unforgettable. Marie and Nelson were also dancing, as were many couples on the floor. The song was simply irresistible. Kate had her arms around Will’s shoulders, one resting, and the other playing with his gorgeous hair. His hands were on her lower back, his fingers sometimes tapping to the music.

Their eyes were on each other and their bodies moved as one through the dance floor. They swayed and sashayed smoothly, never once stumbling or running into anyone. William took one hand of hers and twirled her around, his eyes taking in the flow of her body. She returned to him and her eyes were intense with emotion and desire. The dance was not enough.
