Roses at Home-6

The song ended and faded into a new one. Kate wasn’t sure how much longer they danced but her feet never tired. Being in his arms, their faces inches apart was the most beautiful experience she had ever felt. Soon dinner was being served and the dancing ceased. It was at this point that William and Kate realized they had missed lunch, and were quite hungry. They satisfied themselves with all the wonderful wedding food.

After a rich dessert of chocolate cakes, Marie and Nelson were ready to say goodbye and leave for their honeymoon. By this point, only the wedding party and family were left. With hugs all around and one more group toast, in which Kate chose cranberry juice instead of more wine, the newlyweds left happily in a limo for the airport.

Kate stifled a yawn. It had been a very long day. William took notice, slipped his hand around hers and led her away from the crowd. They walked in silence out of the ballroom. The sun was setting. William led her out into the magnificent garden. Lanterns had been strung along walkways for the guests and the fountains were all on. It was a beautiful sight. They walked further until they reached the main fountain, a huge ornate design, with Greek gods and mermaids everywhere. Kate barely took notice. Her head was getting heavy from the alcohol. She was a light, if at all, drinker. They sat on the edge of the fountain, where the mist played delicately with their backs.

“So,” William started, playing with the water with one hand. “What shall we do tomorrow?” Kate thought silently for a moment.

“I have to go to brunch with my family.” She replied, a little sadness in her voice. “I always do when I visit the country. But you can join me; they’d love to see you again.”

William shook his head. “No, I think you should enjoy your family time. Are you leaving for London tomorrow then?”

“Yes, right after brunch.” Kate rested her heavy head on William’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, I wish I could stay longer.” She closed her eyes. He smelled wonderful. And the soothing sounds of the fountain were making her very sleepy.

“Well let’s enjoy today then,” William turned slightly and saw Kate falling asleep. “Alright sleepy head maybe we should get you inside first.”

He put a strong arm around her waist and she got up. Kate slid her arm under his and tucked her hand in his back pocket. Together they walked up to the manor. “You cannot hold your drink well, can you?” William asked quietly.

“I’m not much of a drinker darling.” Kate yawned again. They walked slowly, without purpose, through the halls. After a short while, they reached Kate’s suite. “Oh, lovely.” She opened the door and led them in. The evening breeze played with the sheer curtains at the open windows. The entire room smelled very much like girl. Kate made to move towards her suitcase and tripped over her peach shoes, they very same ones that tripped her earlier that day. With a yelp of a surprise she hit the floor. And then she laughed. “These shoes hate me,” she mocked whined and held them up.

“Are you alright?” William asked, his eyes full of laughter but his voice full of concern. “Should I get the doctor?”

“Oh no,” Kate said grabbing William’s outstretched hand and pulling herself up. “There will be time for that in the morning. I’m sure he’s resting now anyway.” She attempted to walk forward but stopped. “Oh dear, it’s tender again.” She stopped where she was and looked very much like a flamingo, one leg up in the air.

William laughed, “Let me help you.” He scooped her up and carried her, for the second time that day. He placed her gently on her bed. She slipped off her shoes and cardigan. William sat down next to her. She looked tired but alert. “You look tired, perhaps I should go then.” It was almost a question instead of a statement. He began to get up but Kate touched his arm.

“You don’t have to leave,” she paused. “We could talk or…” she paused again. “We could talk or hang out or something…” She looked into his eyes.

“Or something?” He looked back.

She cocked her head to the side. “I mean to say, you don’t have to--.” Her sentence remained unfinished. He kissed her with so much passion that she actually forgot to breathe. One of his hands was in her hair and the other grasped her around the waist. He leaned her back in the bed and lay on top of her. The last coherent thought she remembered that night was wondering if they had shut the door behind them. This would be a terrible thing for Sir and Lady Sheffield to walk in on.
