Roses at Home-10

Four days, since Kate last heard from William. It was Thursday, and it was raining again. She replied to his email on Sunday and hadn’t heard from him since. She wasn’t too worried. If something had happened to the leading star of Narnia, she would have heard about it. Nor was she upset. After all, he is out working, he’s probably busy. He’s out conquering the world and she was eating her weight in Ben & Jerry’s New York Cheesecake Ice Cream.

“Bollocks,” she muttered. She had scraped the ice cream out of her pint, which meant she would now have to get up to get more from the freezer. She had bought out the grocer’s collection of Ben & Jerry’s, then rented out hours of crying movies. Tomorrow was a bank holiday, and she planned to spend her long weekend in bed, eating ice cream, crying, and missing William. He had left a hole in her mind and soul. And though she knew better, she was going to try as hard as possible to fill it with fatty foods and a good long cry.

She had just retrieved another pint from the freezer when her cell phone rang. “Who could it be now?” She looked at her watch, it was late. Almost midnight. She checked the screen, it was an international call. It could only be one person.

“Hello?” She said, waiting to hear his voice.

“Hello Kate, this is Lucas, William’s agent.” Ok, she definitely was not waiting or hoping for that voice.

“Erm, hi. Is everything alright?”

“Well, yes and no.” Lucas took a deep breath. “I mean everything is fine, William is fine. He is on a flight to California right now. I’m already here. Listen, I need a favor from you.”

“Why?” Kate dug back into her ice cream and lay down.

“William is not as focused as I would like. He is spacey in interviews, he is moping in his photo shoots and he refuses to go to any party events. I need him to be sociable right now.”

“Well, so you want me to talk to him?”

“Sure, but it has to be in person. I want you to fly to Los Angeles tomorrow.”

“WHAT?!” Kate sat up and dropped her ice cream. “Are you kidding? Tomorrow?”

“I am totally serious. William really needs to be focused right now. You would be helping him.”

Kate thought silently for a minute. She did have a long weekend, and taking Monday off would not be a problem. And it would be to see William again. And he did need it for his career. “Alright, I guess I can try. Do you know anyone I can call to book a flight?”

“It is already done. I have a car coming to pick you up tomorrow morning at 6.”

“Wow, early. Wait,” Kate paused. “How did you know I would say yes?”

Lucas chuckled and his voice softened. “Miss Martin, I know what love can do to a person. I will see you tomorrow night. Goodnight.”

Kate hung up the phone and looked at the clock. She had six hours to pack. She was going to Los Angeles! She quickly drafted emails to her parents and her boss and ran around to find suitcases.
