TITLE: Something new
“My word, was it always this cold?” Hui asked herself and pulled her collar up against the wind. Her high heeled boots clicked away unheard on the pavement, mingling with the many other shoes tapping away on their various journeys. She had worn no stockings or tights, assuming that the suede pants would be sufficient in keeping warm. But in England, in winter, that is a dangerous assumption. The cashmere sweater and woolen overcoat were warm, but the Thames sent up a nasty gust every few minutes, enough to freeze anyone’s bones.
Even through the cold, she was happy to be back in London. It was always a fun city and was always full of lovely people and lovely things. Sure, it was colder than Singapore, but at least she could wear her lovely scarves.
Sometimes it was fun to be cold just to snuggle up and be warm. Toss a big blanket on and drink hot cocoa.
And then other times it was close to misery. Hui made up her mind and ran into the nearest coffee shop. Scanning the menu, she opted for herbal tea and took it to go. The cup warmed her hands through her gloves and the tea itself warmed her insides nicely. She continued her perilous walk towards the fashion district.
A tune interrupted her pace and she stopped walking to fish into her oversized bag. She could hear it but not see it. And she only had one hand, her other hand held the tea and balanced both straps of the bag.
“Blast, where is that-Oh my goodness!” She shrieked mid-sentence. A man walked into her tea cup spilling its contents all over Hui, himself and in her bag. Who knew one cup held so much? “Why don’t you watch where you are going?” she said, fishing into her bag again for the phone and tissues.
“I’m so sorry, I’m such a klutz you have no idea,” the man, young man waved both his hands around his head as he spoke. “I just don’t think I’m so sorry. God you must be burning. Let me help you.”
“Actually I’m freezing because I’m wet and it doesn’t get any warmer than freezing now and I …” Hui never finished her sentence. She had finally given up on the search for the phone and was resigned to speak her mind when she looked up. Her words were lost on the wind when she saw his eyes. Blue with little bits of gray dancing around, like his words dancing in her head. Her eyes widened a bit as full comprehension set in. He was there, standing right next to her. Hold her arm and trying to say something.
She was going to pull a fangirl. She could feel it moving deep inside of her. She wanted to throw her bag down, grab her face, scream and run around the block. She wanted to tell him a million things at once. She wanted to cry and laugh and sob and giggle all at once. She wanted to pull out her phone and snap as many pictures as possible.
Somehow, she remembered to breathe. His hand still held her arm, half supporting it and the weight of the bag. He had a strange expression. “Are you alright?” He asked, looking ready to run. Perhaps he had the seen the flash of the fangirl in her eyes.
“Oh yes, I’m alright.” Hui gathered any last ounces of sense and focused on her words. “I’m just wet, and cold. And I was trying to answer my phone, see. That’s why I had stopped in the middle of the walk. So it is my fault too. Sorry I yelled at you.”
“No its completely alright,” he smiled. His hand still hadn’t moved. “I really am a klutz.”
Hui pulled her bag back up on her shoulder, causing him to release his arm. She immediately regretted doing so. He had a curious look on his face and before Hui could wonder what he was thinking, he leaned in close to her…
If she hadn’t pulled a fangirl yet, this could do it. William Moseley was a mere inches from her. And getting closer! She could feel his body heat and his breath. She looked up and almost laughed.
He sniffed her. Almost the way a person does when checking the smell of something new and unknown.
Hui stifled another laugh. Her biggest celebrity crush just sniffed her.
“Was that tea that you were carrying?” He asked, almost hopeful. “Herbal, perhaps jasmine tea?”
“Wow, you’re quite good at this game.” Hui smiled. “Yes it was tea. Now it’s just a big icy mess.” She looked down at the tea that managed to miss them both and land on the ground. It was almost completely frozen.
“Well, please allow me to get you a refill then,” Will stated. “Which way to the shop?” Hui turned silently and led him to the shop she was only a few minutes earlier. “By the way, I’m William.”
Hui almost let out ‘I know’ before turning politely and saying “Hui. It’s lovely to meet you William.”
Over tea, they realized how much fun complete strangers could be. Hui finally admitted to ‘being a fan of his work’ and he relented to having a photo taken.
“So you’re not going to put that on a bloggy website thing are you?” William asked.
Hui looked at him and said in a very unconvincing voice “I have no idea what you are talking about.”
He laughed. “I guess I asked for that one.” Hui nodded smiling. “Well I must be going, work to do, movies to make.” He stood up and stretched. “But I must say it has been delightful. And I look forward to spilling tea on you again, Hui.”
“Can you do it in slightly more pleasant weather?” She asked without missing a beat.
“I’ll do it anytime you prefer.” He handed her a slip of paper. “See you soon.” He left without another word. The paper had a series of numbers which she quickly programmed into her phone.
Hui shook her head slightly. What a day. She didn’t fangirl once. And why should she? Yes he is absolutely gorgeous. But he is a person, with wonderful qualities and a contagious laugh. And sparkling eyes. And he did say sorry.
Oh goodness. This was a whole new level of crush.
