His Name Was Death And Hell Followed With Him
Chapter Five
A Glimpse Beyond This Illusion
June 30 2008
“Okay, you have got to tell me what’s going on,” Jess says. “I’ve barely seen you the last few weeks, ever since you started staying at his place.”
They sit down in the booth near the window and Courtney appears almost by magic and places two cups of coffee in front of them.
When she’s back behind the counter, Jess leans across the table. “Dean, you need to start talking.”
Dean shakes his head. “I can’t do that Jess, at least, not right now.”
“Don’t give me that crap Dean Winchester. You know something and you’re not telling me.”
Dean cocks an eyebrow. “What?”
“For the last several weeks, you’ve been acting… unlike yourself,” she explains. “Ever since you met Cas.”
Dean drops his gaze to the table top. “Who even told you that I’ve been at his place this whole time?”
“It wasn’t that hard to figure out Dean, you were never at your place, I could never get hold of you and then John told me that you were there.”
“Of course he did.”
“What’s the big deal?” Jess wants to know. “And what, you’re dating him now?”
“No,” Dean answers a little too quickly.
“You’re not dating him?” Jess replies. “So you’ve been staying at his place because?”
“Fine, is that what you want to hear?” Dean says. “That I’m ‘dating’ him.”
“What’s with the air quotes?” Jess asks with a laugh. “You either are you aren’t. And if you are, then that’s great. Weird but great.”
“Why is it weird?” Dean asks.
“Because you have never dated anyone Dean, you’ve hooked up with people but you’ve never been with the same person longer than a couple of days.”
“That’s not true.”
Jess laughs again. “Yeah it is but it’s okay, you’re with Cas now.”
“Thanks for you approval.” Dean replies.
“Ash told me that he saw you and Cas leaving Andra’s on Fifth.” Jess says, changing the subject.
“Are you stalking me or something?” Dean replies with a smirk. “God, what is it with you, with everyone. Why can’t you just leave me alone? And how the hell do you even
know about Andra, I thought you hated that stuff.”
“I do. Sam took me there once, in freshman year.”
They fall silent at the mention of Sam’s name.
Dean’s thoughts turn to Cas and everything that he’s learned in the past few weeks. It was all still so strange to him but the more he thought about it, the more he was
tempted to try one of Cas’ suggestions.
“Dean?”
“Yeah?”
“Why can’t you just tell me what’s going on? Whatever is happening, I want to help you, so let me help you.”
“Jess,” Dean answers. “I really do want to but I can’t right now, there’s so much going on and I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
“What’s it going to take to get you to talk?” Jess wonders. “Do I have to go and talk to your boyfriend?”
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“It’s okay Dean, you can say the words; the world isn’t going to explode if you do.”
“It might do.” Dean mutters under his breath.
“Why aren’t you telling me what you know?” Jess asks him. “I believe you when you say that it’s all complicated but Dean, he was like family to me as well and if you know
something that could… I deserve to know.”
Dean swallows his mouthful of coffee. “I know that you do but I already told you, I don’t even know where to start. Everything that’s happened to me the last couple of
months, I’m still dealing with it okay, so just let it go.”
“So how about you just try then.” Jess answers.
Dean finishes off his drink and pushes the cup away.
“I can’t Jess,” he says. “I’m sorry. I wish that I could but I don’t have the words to even try.”
They’re silent for what feels like the longest time and then Jess shifts in the seat and crosses her arms over her chest.
“Well if you’re not going to tell me then don’t be angry when I go to Cas.” She tells him.
Dean had called Cas when he left the diner, Jess had stormed out in a huff a few minutes beforehand.
He had told him that he was going back to the house, he really didn’t want to but he needed to check and see what sort of damage he was looking at. He also needed to pick
up some clean clothes.
Standing on the front porch, his key in the door, he hesitates before going inside.
He can remember everything so clearly and it still scares the hell out of him.
Several minutes pass before he finally gathers the courage to open the door and he cautiously steps inside.
Scanning the room, he prepares himself for the worst.
The amount of water that had filled the house, Dean was expecting to find that most of it still probably hadn’t drained even a few weeks later.
What he found, was nothing.
It was as if literally nothing at all had happened.
There was no sign of any water, the furniture was in perfect condition; well as perfect as it had been a few weeks earlier and the carpet was bone dry.
“What the hell?” Dean mutters to himself.
Making his way into the kitchen, he finds more of the same, not one single drop or stain.
Walking through the house, he steps into the bedroom and just about passes out when he feels a hand land on his shoulder.
Spinning around he comes face to face with Ash.
“Fuck sake Ash, what the hell are you doing in my house?” Dean cries out. “In my bedroom even, explain yourself.”
“What? I know where your spare key is and oh yeah, bite me.” Ash replies with a smile.
“What do you wa…”
Dean is interrupted by the loudest, most annoying screeching sound echoing down the hallway and he could have sworn that his heart skipped a beat.
Ash turns toward the door. “What the hell was that?”
Dean shakes his head to himself, grabs a duffle bag from the closet and shoves handfuls of clothes into it before he grabs Ash’s arm and pulls him down the hall.
“Dude, what is going on around here?” Ash asks again.
Dean steps into the living room and almost jumps out of his skin when the sound echoes around them again.
It was the strangest thing, it was almost as if it surrounded them, Dean could feel whatever it was as it moved past.
Ash almost tripped over when Dean backed up into the kitchen.
“This place is fucking haunted?” Ash questions him. “That or… hell I have no idea.”
Dean spins on his heel to face him. “Just so we’re clear, you heard that right?”
Ash nods back at him. “I heard it.”
Dean steps toward him. “It’s not the first time this has happened, you should have been here when the whole place was knee high in water.”
Dean watches as Ash’s eyes grow wide and he backs toward the kitchen door.
“Where are you going?”
“Dude, if you’ve got ghosts then I’m out of here.”
Dean shakes his head and then grabs his wallet and keys from the counter and follows Ash out of the house.
The two of them stand in the driveway staring at the house.
“Dean.”
“Yeah, what?” He snaps.
Dean glances at Ash who is pointing at the living room window.
“What are you doing?” Dean asks.
“You see that right, please tell me that you see that.”
Ash points again and Dean’s jaw drops when he sees it.
As clear as day standing in the living room window was Sam.
“Dean, I can’t understand you when you speak like that.”
“Cas, you need to get over to the house. Right now!”
The line crackles and Dean has to shake Ash’s hand away from his arm.
“Dean, what the hell?” Ash cries out. “What’s going on? Why the hell is your brother in the living room?”
Dean ignores him and continues talking to Cas. “Sam is standing right there in the window.”
“I’m not sure I understand.”
“Sam is standing in the fucking window. Why the fuck is he standing in my window?”
“Dean.”
Dean spins around and just about drops his phone when he sees Cas standing right there and then he looks at Ash who is still staring at the house and hasn’t noticed that
they’ve been joined by a third person.
Dean ends the call and tucks the phone into his pocket and then points to the window.
“I was afraid that this might happen.” Cas says.
Dean stares back at him. “You care to explain that? What were you afraid of?”
“I spoke to Andra and she shared a concern that after that night when the house flooded, that it would draw Sam to you,” Cas explains. “It appears that she was correct.”
“What does that even mean?” Dean asks. “And is it really a bad thing that Sam is drawn here? Isn’t that what we want?”
Cas takes a step forward.
“Dude, where the hell did you come from?”
Dean slaps Ash on the back causing him to stumble. “He showed up while you were busy doing whatever the hell it is that you were doing.”
“Dean, this is some insane shit, what is going on around here?” Ash asks.
“That’s the $64,000 dollar question and yeah you don’t have to go back in there.” Dean replies.
Cas turns to face Dean. “Do not be afraid of him Dean, he needs to communicate with you and to do that we have to go inside.”
“I’m staying out here.”
Dean ignores Ash and follows Cas to the front door but when he glances at the window again, the space is empty and he feels his shoulders sag.
Cas opens the front door and steps inside without hesitating but Dean can’t quite bring himself to do the same so he stands on the front porch his hands balled into fists at
his sides.
Several minutes later Cas reappears and stands beside Dean.
“There is no one there,” Cas tells him. “I do not feel his energy. I do not feel the energy of anyone.”
Dean squeezes his eyes shut and takes a step backward. “What does that mean?”
“Sam is no longer there,” Cas replies.
Dean shakes his head and makes his way back to the sidewalk. Ash is still standing there, pale as ever.
“What’s going on?” He asks. “And I want you to say that this was all… some elaborate prank that you’ve cooked up cos if it is then yay you.”
Dean shakes his head. “I don’t know what to tell you. It sure as hell isn’t a prank.”
Ash starts to back away. “Okay great well I’m just gonna… be anywhere but here.”
Dean stands there and watches as Ash disappears down the street and then he turns back to Cas.
“What do we do now?” Dean asks. “Because I have no idea what’s going on let alone how to solve it.”
“Now that Sam has appeared to you in a more physical form, we should return to Andra.”
Dean shakes his head. “How come you still don’t know anything? If you’re an Angel of the Lord and all?”
“If Sam had passed over, then perhaps I would be able to track him down.”
“When we went to see Andra, did you believe that Sam was dead?” Dean asks.
“I was unsure,” Cas replies. “When I first spoke to Sam all those weeks ago, I couldn’t get a true sense of his soul, it was as if he were in two places at once, the mere
physical presence of him appeared to me but everything else, was… lost.”
“And now, you think that he is alive?”
Cas nods back at him. “Yes Dean, I believe that Sam is alive and is trapped within Broken Creek.”
Dean brings his hand to his face and wipes at his eyes. “I feel like this is some bizarre never ending nightmare and I just want it to damn well stop.”
Cas steps toward him and places his hand on Dean’s arm. “I understand that this is difficult but I promise that I will do what I can to make this better.”
Dean shakes his head. “Stop saying that to me, you can’t make anything better. You can’t stop this stupid insane stuff from happening and you can’t bring Sam back so just
stop.”
Dean begins to pace back and forth, every so often he scuffs the toe of his boot on the concrete until finally Cas reaches out and grabs his arm.
Dean stops mid step and turns to face him. “What?”
Cas seems to recoil slightly at the tone of Dean’s voice and he instantly feels like an asshole.
“What are we supposed to do?” Dean finally asks. “This is all still so… I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around what’s happening to me, to all of us. I just want my life
back.”
“And I shall help you get it back,” Cas says. “And I will not stop until I do. We will try everything Dean, I will use every resource, every lead I can dig up. I know that you do not
want to believe in my promises but I would like you to try.”
Dean had to close his eyes, he couldn’t handle what he was seeing right now.
All of this still made him incredibly nervous and confused.
He can feel Cas squeeze his hand and he dares to open his eyes for just a moment.
Cas is staring at a fire in the middle of the room, his other hand was raises toward it while Andra stood across from them, chanting in Latin.
Dean exhales the breath he didn’t realize he had been holding in and the shadows in the room increase, a howling wind followed quickly after.
“What’s going on?” Dean asks, his voice barely audible above the hissing wind.
He doesn’t get a response so instead he focuses on the fire.
Andra’s chanting grows louder until it was the only thing he can hear.
The words fill his ears and it becomes almost too much to bear but then just when he thinks he can’t handle it anymore, it stops.
He can feel Cas pulling on his arm and when he turns to look, he has to reach out to stop him from tumbling backwards.
He helps Cas across the room to the sofa and then he turns back to Andra who was staring at the open space beside her.
“What’s going on?” He questions her.
“Sam is with us.”
Dean’s eyes grow wide and he can feel goose bumps rising along his arms and he scans the room for any sign of this brother.
“Where is he?”
Andra points to her right. “He’s here Dean.”
“Why can’t I see him?”
Andra sucks in a deep breath. “His energy isn’t very strong, it might not be enough to manifest to you.”
“Why not?” Dean wonders. He checks Cas one more time and then makes his way over to Andra.
“His spirit is still attached to his body,” Andra explains. “He’s telling me that he isn’t gone, that he hasn’t passed over. He uh… he says that he’s… stuck. He’s waiting for you
to find him.”
Dean watches as Andra stumbles slightly and then she falls to her knees, Dean is barely able to catch her before she falls completely to the ground and he helps her up and
walks her over to the sofa to sit beside Cas.
“He’s gone now.” Andra says.
Dean collapses on the floor in front of the sofa and brings his hand to his face.
“What else did he say?”
Andra sits up, a little more colour coming back to her face. “He said that he was closer to you than you thought.”
“That’s it?” Dean asks, the disappointment evident in his voice.
Andra shakes her head. “He doesn’t remember the exact location, he said that it’s been too long and he doesn’t know but there was something else.”
“What?”
“He said, and I quote, ‘His name is Death and Hell will follow with him’.”
Dean lies down on the sofa and props his head on a cushion. Closing his eyes he can hear Cas pacing back and forth.
He was exhausted, the day that they had had, he felt so close to Sam and yet further away than ever.
There were still so many questions and he was no closer to finding the answers.
“Cas. Dean says with a sigh.
“Yes?”
“Why can’t you do more?” Dean wonders. “If you’re this all powerful Angel of the Lord, how come you can’t find Sam?”
Cas had been waiting for Dean to ask him more about that, it was one question he had pondered may times himself.
“The truth Dean,” Cas begins. “Is that I can’t locate Sam because I feel that he is not on our plane of existence.”
Dean opens his eyes and sits up. “What the hell does that mean?”
“I am granted access to Heaven, with assistance, I can see inside purgatory and with even more assistance I can break through the gates of Hell but there are other planes
of that even I cannot see into. Perhaps the reason there have been no clues as to Sam’s disappearance, is because there are very few people who access the place he is
being held.”
Dean thinks about that for a moment and then he starts laughing.
“Did I say something amusing?” Cas asks him.
Dean rolls his eyes. “Yeah, sure.”
“Well… okay then.” Cas says, his eyes narrowing.
“What do you think he meant when he said, ‘His name is Death and Hell will follow with him’.”
Cas sits down on the sofa, pushing Dean aside to give him some room.
“I have been thinking about that a lot, there are many explanations for those words but I cannot come up with one that could tell us where Sam is.” Cas tells him.
“So he could be trapped in hell for all we know?”
Cas shrugs his shoulders ever so slightly. “It is possible but I have checked with my sources and no one has given any indication.”
“Death could have Sam?” Dean says. “Whoever has him has brought… an army with him?”
Cas studies Dean for a moment and his face seems to light up. “What did you just say?”
Dean rubs at his eyes again. “I dunno, does it matter cos none of this makes any sense.”
“I think that perhaps that you are right and I know just the person… well demon, who could help us.”
“Cas, what are you talking about?”
“I will explain everything later, I promise but I think that there is something else of great importance that we should deal with first.”
******
Dean taps his finger on the arm of the chair.
They had been sitting there for the better part of 15 minutes and still no one had spoken.
“Dean, can you please tell us what this is all about?” Mary finally asks.
Dean leans forward in the seat and looks at his mother. “Mom, it’s about Sam.”
He watches her as her eyes widen in shock and she shifts in the seat to look at John.
“What about him?” She asks, her voice filled with a mixture of hope and panic.
“I found something.”
John stands from the chair near the window and begins to pace back and forth. “Dean, we’ve been over this, there are no leads in his case. There hasn’t been a lead since
the night he vanished.”
Dean glances over at his father. “Dad, I know that’s what it seems like and I guess for a long time that was true but there is something now.”
John stops pacing and turns to look at him. “What are you talking about? Because that night you came over, those things that you said… it was pure nonsense.”
“It wasn’t nonsense.” Dean retorts.
“Dean, you were drunk and after your rambling, you passed out.”
Dean angrily shakes his head and catches his mother looking at him.
“I wasn’t that drunk, and I was tired.”
“No,” John snaps at him. “You were drunk and you weren’t making sense.”
“What are you talking about?” Mary wants to know.
Dean looks at her again. “For several months now, I’ve been seeing things. Shadows, doors opening and closing on their own. I’ve heard things, voices, footsteps.”
“Dean,” Mary starts to say. “You can’t be serious?”
“I am serious Mom,” Dean tells her. “Then I met Cas and he saw some of those things as well.”
“Well okay, I’m not really sure what to say Dean, I’m not sure what Cas has to do with any of this either.”
“Honestly, I don’t really know either,” Dean answers. “I just know that he’s seen the things that I’ve seen, he’s made me feel like I’m not going crazy.”
“Dean, you’re not going crazy.” Mary tells him.
“Thanks.” Dean mumbles.
Dean glances over at Cas who had been silent the entire time. “You gonna add anything to this.”
“Dean is not going crazy.” Cas says to Mary and Dean cocks an eyebrow at him.
“Thanks for the help.” Dean retorts.
“The things that Dean has seen and the things that he has heard, I have also experienced these things.” Cas continues.
Dean shakes his head, this wasn’t exactly going as he had planned.
“Cas, you need to tell them the truth, they don’t believe me, so maybe if you say something then…”
“Mr. and Mrs. Winchester,” Cas begins. “Is there anything that I can clarify that Dean has told you?”
John glances at his wife but neither one says anything.
“Very well,” Cas says.
“Wait,” John replies. “I’m not sure that I understand any of what’s going on. What makes you think that Sam is alive and somewhere out there?”
“I cannot locate him,” Cas answers. “I cannot feel his presence.”
John cocks an eyebrow. “What the hell does that even mean?”
“Perhaps I should have started with the truth about me.”
Dean reaches over and places his hand on Cas’ arm. “You sure you wanna do that?”
Cas smiles back at him. “Yes I am sure.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Winchester, my true name is Castiel and I am an Angel of the Lord.”
“Fuck sake,” Dean mutters under his breath. “You do hear how it sounds?”
Cas looks up at him. “I hear my voice perfectly fine, are you having trouble?”
Dean shakes his head. “No, I hear you loud and clear, it’s the words that sound insane.”
Dean glances over at his parents, they’re both just sitting there staring at Cas.
“Mom?”
“I have heard a lot of things in my life Dean, but I can’t even begin to describe this, what on earth has happened to you?”
“Mom, come on, you think that we’re making this stuff up?”
“No, this is the most bizarre stunt that you have ever pulled.” She snaps at him.
“This isn’t a stunt,” Dean answers. “Seriously, he’s telling you the truth.”
John takes Mary’s hand and gives her a look that Dean recognizes well. “Why are you doing this Dean?”
Dean sighs and leans back in the seat, this was not turning out how he had wanted it to. He looks over at Cas and for whatever reason he’s smiling. “Maybe you should do
that thing, the wing thing.”
Cas nods back at him. “Of course.” He stands up and moves to the far wall where there is more clear space.
Dean watches in awe just as he did the first time he saw it and now he watches his parents as they see it for the first time.
Mary was so stunned that she almost fell out of her chair but what was more surprising was John’s reaction.
Dean couldn’t really tell what he was thinking, his face gave nothing away and that annoyed him greatly.
A few minutes later, Cas moves back to the sofa and sits next to Dean.
“Mom?”
Mary doesn’t move, she doesn’t say a word and Dean leans forward, he reaches out and rests his hand on her arm. “Mom, you okay?”
Finally she turns to look at him. “What did I… what on earth did I just see?”
Dean can’t help but smile. “Yeah, that was my first thought too but it’s the truth. Turns out there’s a shit ton of stuff out there that we had no idea about, things that we can’t
see or hear but they’re there and they’re real.”
******
“I can’t believe that just happened.” Dean says.
Cas looks over at him and smiles softly. “Sometimes people can surprise you. They react in ways that you could never have imagined.”
“Yeah, you could say that again.” Dean mutters.
“Everything is going to be okay Dean.”
Dean raises an eyebrow at him. “Sure, I’ll take your word for it.”
They drive in silence for a while which Dean is kind of grateful for but then he has all of those questions pop up again.
“Where the hell are you taking me?”
“You are driving.” Cas points out.
“That’s not what I meant,” Dean replies. “Where are we going?”
“Just follow my directions and we will be there in no time at all.”
Cas points right and Dean turns the car and continues to follow Cas’ directions until they pull into an overgrown parking lot.
“What is this place?” Dean wants to know.
There are a few abandoned looking buildings scattered around but an empty lot sat before them, the weeds and grass were waist high.
Cas doesn’t answer him, instead he climbs out of the car and starts walking toward the open lot.
Dean quickly follows him but he can’t see any particular building that Cas might be heading towards.
He catches up and grabs Cas’ arm. “Would you stop for a moment and tell me where we are going.”
Cas stops and spins around to face him. “This place is used as a mutual meeting ground between Angels and Demons. I plan to summon one by the name of Meg.”
Dean glances around the lot. “This place, just right out in the open like that.”
Cas takes a few steps forward and waves his hand in the air, and Dean cocks an eyebrow but then his jaw drops when a rundown, dilapidated building appears out of
nowhere.
“Should I even be surprised?” Dean asks.
Cas looks at him and smiles. “Probably not,” he motions toward the open door. “Shall we?”
Dean watches as Cas sets up the summoning spell, the whole thing seemed like some sort of ridiculous nightmare but at the same time it fascinated him.
That of course didn’t stop the boredom from creeping up on him and he had to stifle a yawn.
Looking for somewhere to sit down, he resigns himself to leaning against the wall and he closes his eyes for just a moment.
When Cas calls out to him, he opens his eyes and is surprised to see that Cas’ spell worked, there was a Demon standing in front of Cas.
“Castiel,” Meg says, a devilish smile playing across her lips. Fitting of course. “It’s good to see you again. Not so good to be trapped in this damn thing but I’ll let that slide for
now seeing as how it’s been so long and all.”
Cas begins to pace back and forth while Dean takes a step forward.
“What can you tell…”
“Wait a minute,” Meg says, cutting him off. “You want to jump straight into bed without buying me dinner first? Not that there’s anything straight about you of course.”
Cas glares back at her. “I do not have time for this.”
“At least introduce me to your friend there, your very human friend might I add.”
“This is Dean Winchester.”
Meg smiles again and it sends a shiver down Dean’s spine.
“Ahh yes, Dean Winchester.”
Dean takes a step forward. “You know my name?”
Meg nods back at him. “Of course I do. You’ve been causing a lot of problems for us the last few months.”
“What are you talking about?” Dean questions her as he takes another step closer, it was too close for Cas and he holds his arm out to stop him.
“What do you know about Sam Winchester?” Cas asks.
Meg paces back and forth within the circle she’s trapped in. “I know a lot of things Castiel, especially about Sam Winchester.”
Dean feels his heart thudding in his chest.
So close.
“Tell me what you know.” Cas says.
“Let’s just say that I offer up a few nuggets of information,” Meg replies. “What do I get out of it?”
“What do you want?”
Meg smiles again. “Castiel, where do I go with a lead like that?”
“Answer the question.” Cas retorts.
“I want free reign for 24 hours, I don’t want you or any of your holier than thou brethren coming after me.”
Cas shakes his head. “I cannot do that. I cannot in good conscience allow you to be free amongst humans.”
“Oh don’t worry about that,” Meg says. “I promise I won’t kill anyone, I have business that I need to take care of.”
“What business would that be?”
“None of yours,” Meg responds. “All I ask is for 24 hours to take care of… business and then I’ll be gone again just like that.” She snaps her fingers and Dean jumps.
No one says anything for what feels like the longest time and Dean starts to grow impatient.
“Well, what’s it going to be Castiel?” Meg asks. “You wanna know about your boyfriend’s little bro, then give me what I want.”
Cas turns to look at Dean.
“You have to, I need to know about Sam.” Dean says.
“I can’t give her such freedoms.” Cas replies.
Dean shakes his head. “You have to, we’ll deal with whatever happens, later.”
Cas turns back to face Meg. He draws in a deep breath and nods ever so slightly. If he were making a deal for anyone other than Dean Winchester… he would never agree
to these terms.
“I will allow this one time pass,” he says. “I will not hold you to your word that you will not harm anyone but if I learn that you have…”
“Then you will hunt me down and make me pay for my crimes, blah blah blah. I’ve heard it all before buddy and I don’t really care. Just make it happen.”
The room falls silent and Dean can see Cas close his eyes, a moment later he opens them again and takes a step closer to Meg.
“It is done. Now start talking.”
“What do you wanna know?” Meg asks again with that devilish smile.
Dean steps closer but careful to stay and Cas’ side.
“What happened to Sam Winchester?”
Meg steps as closer to the edge of the circle as she can. “Do you want the whole story or can I give you the watered down version, cos we could be here a long time.”
“Just talk damn it.” Dean says.
“Fine,” Meg replies. “Sam Winchester and his bubbly blonde bestie stupidly entered a site that we would consider sacred.”
Dean cocks an eyebrow. “You have sacred places.”
Meg turns to look at him. “Sure do sweet pea. As I was saying, Sam entered a place that a few of my, let’s call them friends, didn’t really appreciate that, so they did
something about it.”
“What are you talking about?” Cas asks her.
“Sam is trapped in that delightful hellhole,” she smiles again and it still unnerves Dean to no end.
“What do you mean trapped?” Cas wants to know.
Meg paces again and Dean just wants to get his hands on her and rip her apart.
“It’s a place not at all unlike purgatory.”
“What the fuck? I thought he wasn’t dead.” Dean cries out.
Meg shakes her head. “Not dead cupcake, trapped. What part of that word are you having trouble with?”
“Keep talking.” Cas replies.
“My boss put him there as a warning.”
“A warning to whom?” Cas wants to know.
“To the entire Winchester line. Mess with the bull and you get the horns baby.”
Dean turns to look at Cas. “What is she talking about, none of it makes any sense.”
“You Winchesters are pain in the ass, quite literally,” Meg continues. “And going by that dumb look on your face, I really do believe that you have no idea what I’m talking
about.”
Dean balls his hands into fists at his side. “Then explain it to me.”
“How close are you with daddy dearest?”
Dean glances quickly at Cas again before returning his focus to Meg. “What?”
Meg sighs heavily and crosses her arms over her chest. “Daddy’s been keeping secrets from you Dean. John Winchester is a hunter, has been almost his whole life, more so
after his baby boy disappeared.”
Dean takes a step back.
“Killed a few good friends of mine in the process.”
“What are you talking about? What the fuck is a hunter?” Dean responds.
“Wow, apparently I know a lot more than you do, which makes me happy and makes you look like an idiot.” Meg smirks at him.
Dean steps forward again. “What is a hunter?”
Meg motions at Cas. “You wanna explain it to him, or should I?”
Meg doesn’t bother to wait for Cas’ response, she just keeps talking.
“He hunts and kills the supernatural,” Meg tells him. “He’s a huge pain the ass.”
“Of course.” Cas cries out.
Dean turns to look at him. “Of course what?”
Cas grabs Dean’s arm and pulls him to the side. “I should have seen it earlier, when I spoke to your parents. When I told them who I was. John seemed very unconcerned by
it all. As if he were purposely trying to talk you out of getting involved with Sam’s disappearance.”
Meg waves her hand at them. “By devil he’s got it.”
They both look at Meg.
“So, bottom line is this. The Winchesters have been pissing of my kind for what, like 85 years or so now, but the majority of it all started with that delusional idiot, what was
his name again? Oh yeah, Thomas Bradley way back in 1927.”
“Where have I heard that name before?” Dean asks no one in particular.
“The young man at Broken Creek,” Cas says. “The one that I told you about.”
Dean turns to look at him. “What are you talking about? He wasn’t a Winchester.”
Dean turns to face Meg again who’s grinning from ear to ear.
“Oh you poor clueless moron,” Meg says. “Do you really think that the Winchesters would want to be associated with a family member who murdered a bunch of people.”
Dean stares at her with wide eyes. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
Cas steps forward again and places his hand on Dean’s arm.
“The kid was insane. Made such a big deal about being a good boy but actually he was the furthest thing from good and that pleased the boss to no end, he got him to do all
sorts of crazy shit.”
Dean lowers his gaze to the floor. He’s trying to process it all.
Sam was there all along, trapped in that damn building. But how could John have known the truth about it and not said anything?
Okay so maybe he didn’t know who took Sam or where he was but he knew that Dean was telling the truth about the sounds and faces he kept seeing.
“Just one more thing sugar,” Meg adds. “It’s quite possible that you can free Sam from that place but you should know that if you do, he might not be the only thing you let
loose.”
Cas steps up to the edge of the circle. “Is that all?”
Meg shrugs her shoulders. “For now at least.” She points to the circle. “You mind letting me out of here, got that business to take care of and all.”
“I have one more thing to ask,” Cas tells her. “Who do you answer to?”
Meg smiles that smile again. “I usually call him Crowley.”
