Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death
Epilogue
Carry on My Wayward Son
Two Weeks Later.
Sam and Dean stood in the front yard and stared up at the house.
It was completely destroyed, the fire that had followed from Azazel’s death had gutted the entire building.
Sam exhaled loudly and wiped the back of his hand across his eyes. “Dean, where do we go now? Mom and Dad are both gone, the house is gone.”
“We leave,” Dean answered. “There isn’t anything here for us anymore, Sammy.”
Sam kicked a clump of blackened debris with the toe of his shoe. “I can’t believe that this is happening, how did this happen?”
Dean gave his shoulders a shrug. “I wish I knew. I sure as hell wasn’t expecting the house to blow up, that’s for sure.”
“We actually did it though,” Sam replied. “After all this time and everything that’s happened, we killed Azazel, I’m not sure how long it will take before it sinks in.”
“The cost of killing him was higher than it should have been,” Dean added. “Come on Sammy, we should get going.”
Dean began walking toward the car but stopped when he realized that Sam wasn’t following him.
“Sammy, let’s go.”
“I’m not sure that I’m ready to let this go,” Sam replied. “I fought so hard to get back here.”
“I know you did but it’s not home anymore,” Dean told him. “It stopped being a home the day you disappeared.”
“Yeah but... the moment we leave here Dean, it’s real. Mom and Dad are gone, our childhood home is nothing more than a pile of rubble and our lives are ruined.”
Dean smiled sadly. “Yeah but we still have each other, we have Cas and Bobby.”
“What do we do now though?”
Dean glanced at his brother and smiled. “Well, Dad became a hunter after you disappeared so I say you follow in his footsteps.”
“You want me to become a fulltime hunter?”
“Yep,” Dean replied. “I mean think about it, we’re actually pretty good at it. We did kill Azazel after all and he was supposed to be some sort of big deal, I think we can handle a few lousy demons.”
Sam gave his head a shake as a small laugh escaped his lips. “Yeah, you might be right.”
“Besides, Azazel isn’t exactly the last of his kind, there are others out there who are just as bad if not worse than him,” Dean replied. “And between you and me, I really don’t want our lives to become someone else’s. If we can stop it, then we should.”
They finally made their way back to the car and Sam took one last look at the house before he climbed in.
Dean started the engine and pulled the car away from the curb.
“Bobby is already at his new place in South Dakota,” Cas announced as he appeared in the backseat. “He’s waiting for us.”
“You heard anything from Meg or Crowley?” Sam asked.
“Meg said she’ll help if it meant that we got to kill thing and I haven’t heard from Crowley since we broke the binding spell and buried John.” Cas explained. “He made it clear he wanted nothing to do with us.”
“We’ll try and make sure that happens.” Dean said.
“So, we’re really going to do this then?” Sam replied. “We’re going to be hunters?”
“Yep, we really are,” Dean answered. “I’m with Meg, if we get to kill those sons of bitches, I’m up for that.”
“Dad would have liked this,” Sam said. “Being out on the road, I wish here for it.”
Dean glanced at him again. “He would have loved using the Colt.”
“Too bad that there are only two bullets left.” Sam pointed out.
“Actually,” Cas chimed in. “Bobby believes that he may have an idea about that, he wouldn’t give me the specifics but he said he would let us know.”
Dean stared into the rear-view mirror and caught Cas’ line of sight and the two exchanged a smile.
“When we get to Bobby’s, I plan on sleeping for about a week, so maybe after that he can share his plan.” Sam told them.
“Yeah, I don’t really plan on getting much sleep, if you know what I mean.” Dean replied with a wink.
Sam rolled his eyes and sighed heavily. “I really wished I didn’t know. Nothing has changed in the past decade Dean, I didn’t want to hear about your sex life when I was 15 and I still don’t want to hear about it now.”
“You’re just jealous.” Dean replied with a smirk.
“How long is the drive?” Sam asked, ignoring Dean’s last comment. He leant forward in the seat and twisted the knobs on the radio.
“Don’t do that.” Dean told him as he swatted his hand away. “We’ve been over this, it’s house rules Sammy, driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.”
