Oh no! I can't believe your fish are gone :(
I wonder why they would only tell you to use salt--it hardens gills and provides electrolytes...but wouldn't treat an infection or anything. But then you couldn't use the strong stuff with snails, so don't feel too bad. You did what you could.

What size tank do you have, and how many fish do you have in it?
