They're coming! Coming to release me! it laughed and the sound nearly made Maddie clap her hands over her ears. The eggs she was holding would've been ruined.
"Shut up," Maddie murmured, holding the eggs a little tighter.
Can't you feel them? Hear the brat summoning them? Taunting them with her foolish chants and candles? It's just perfect!
Someone was summoning something? She had to act. She had to stop this. If the crone knew that the summoner didn't know what was coming...
Maddie stopped caring about the eggs and sprinted to the fireplace, grabbing the pure iron rod, the bag of salt, and the canteen of holy water she'd swiped from a church months ago. It might not be enough, but she could hope.

Ravyn, almost in tears, was sitting on the floor next to her black chalk circle, oblivious to the smudges and dents that something sinister had made in it in an attempt to hurt her. Who knew if her spells and protection charms had actually worked, or if her tiny cat had saved her from unknown terror? She was oblivious to the true nature of her cat, anyway. Maddie looked around the apartment and felt her blood chill. The markings - though strange and a little off - brought back painful memories for Maddie.
Her mother's kitchen. The kitchen chair. Ropes to bind her to it. A wailing scream of rage and unreachable revenge-
She took a deep breath to push aside the thoughts and forced a smile, taking a wary step inside. The smudges were not missed by Maddie, but she at least had the salt and the iron bar. Those would be helpful. Maddie just hoped it wouldn't come to that.
"I'm Maddie, are you Ravyn?" At the nod, the smile became less forced and she relaxed her arms. "Well, what kind of cleansing circle were you trying to make? What...spirits were you trying to appease? Different spirits respond to different things."
