Flight price weirdness?

A lot of times they don't look at the in between flights, but the destination you are going to, to them all that matters is departure city and arrival city. I've gone through that many times looking for flights from Salt Lake City to Santiago, i'll have a flight that has 3 stops and it'll be the same price as one that only has 1 main stop. It's irritating, my dad works for the airlines and he says if it's not fuel, on season, holiday travel then a lot of the time's it's the departure and the arrival cities that determine the cost of the ticket.
