Converter needed?

Do I need a converter for these appliances in Spain, or will an adapter be okay (I think my laptop, camera, etc., just need an adapter)? All have been bought in the past couple years.

-Individual size George Foreman grill (120V, 60Hz, 760W)
-Blender
-Hair dryer and straightener

According to the Summary Reference Table towards the bottom of ( Read more... )

I don't know the voltage of your blender but I'm going to guess it won't work in Spain. The voltage in Spain is 220v and most, if not all, American appliances are 120v. Your George Foreman and hair straighter will melt. Your hair dryer probably will just poop out on you.

The only thing I bought a converter for was to charge up my Gameboy. The funny thing about converters is that I don't trust them - they make a high-pitched noise while anything is plugged into it so I wouldn't trust it longterm. I've used my converter maybe once or twice, if that. The best thing to do would to buy cheap versions of those items in Spain if you're staying there for a decent amount of time.

Good luck!

If you check all of the appliances/electronics, the voltage should be posted somewhere. Most electronics will be labeled something like 120v/220v or 100v-240v or similar. If they are in both the 100 range and the 200 range, they should work in Spain. All you will need is a plug adapter - whihc is a small piece that only changes the size of the plug so it'll fit in the wall.

Things like the hair dryer blender, grill may only be labeled 110v, 120v, 125v, etc. These things will NOT work in Spain unless you have a voltage converter. This will be a bit bigger and box-like, probably around $25 USD. Your appliances should work fine with the converter, but if you're planning on moving there long-term, you'd probably be better off buying new products when you get there.

Hope this helps!

Haha, I caused a major meltdown of my hair dryer even with a converter. I just bought a European one while I was there.

What Tank Girl said. The appliance itself should indicate whether it will work on the different voltage. Newer products generally are adaptable without the need for a converter, but you want to be sure or you will fry it.

I would also suggest that you might just save yourself some of the hassle and buy these things there - particularly the blender. There's an El Corte Inglés in every city and it sells all these things.
