Fastest 14 days eva!

May 30, 2006 19:26

Well got back from holls at some ungodly hour of the morning on Thursday.
This subsequently meant unpacking then re-packing for the heartland games. BAH!
The furries were kindly looked after by a number of peeps in shifts, there were a few fishy deaths but the rest have survived all well and happy!
Under a cut as far far too long a rant!

The first week in Tunisia was great, met two other couples around our age, was amused at how British we were by finding the only other 2 English couples in the hotel!
Most people there were German, which is fine, but there were some stereo typical ones which kept us amused for hours!
Mainly the fat Speedo guys which looked almost naked due to their bellies hiding their Speedos!
They also took their volley ball a little too seriously......
The entertainment guys were fun, they spoke about six languages each, which was very impressive, but funny in places.
"At 4pm we have beach volleyball, volleyball on the beach!" (when pronouncing 'beach' it was more like bieatch)
Our friends were cool, BUT they just did not want to leave the hotel.
We all went into town once, that was to watch the Arsenal game *sulk* so off d1550lu510n3d and i wondered to do some shopping whilst the other squeezed into *surprise* an English themed pub!
I can understand a bit of why they didn't want to jump into the local feel, the shop keepers can be very pushy, they pester you into their shop, then they pull out things to show you that you don’t even want.
All the time they are saying 'no hassle, no hassle' Grrrr.
If you decide you don’t want anything they get offended, if you do, then you barter, but this takes so long that you don’t have time to go into that many shops or you don't want the hassle of going in.
DO NOT barter for something you don’t actually want to buy.
d1550lu510n3d decided to have a bit of fun to see how low he could get a Rolex watch for, i.e. a fake one.
Starting price was 180 DNR (there are 2.4 DNRs the £), Luke set a low price of 40 DNRs as a piss take and didn’t budge, we got bored so went to leave and they kept going! They offered 40 for the watch, but when he said he didn't want it, they kept trying to push it on him saying 40 is ok, take it!
I had all the money so i exited the shop quickly before they tried to take it off him or something!!
That was the main problem on holiday tho, you had to argue the price of everything every time you wanted a taxi then would try and charge 3-4 DNR more than the actual price. Our representative made sure we knew the costs for the neighbouring towns, but this still didn't deter the taxi drivers from trying it on at every opportunity and more often than not refusing to put on their meters.
In the Souks (markets) no matter how hard you bartered, you would find it cheaper somewhere else, there is a constant feeling of being ripped off.
OK its still cheaper than the UK (except for alcohol) but knowing the prices have been yanked up because you are English does get a little annoying (the traders say they charge the Germans more, but i really don't think that's true). The best thing was just to go to the fixed price shops, yet you got an assistant following you around as if you were a shoplifter, but at least the stuff was priced and there was little hassle.
We did find a nice ice-cream shop which made HUGE Sundays with ice-cream of your own choosing, the ice creams had loadsa fresh fruit and were about 30 cm tall! and cost 7.5 DNR each and worth every penny.

Be careful of the guys on the beach with stuff, they will charge you for everything! If you take a picture of a guy walking his camel across the beach, they will ask you for money.
There are guys on the beach who come up with a bit of white cloth and a decorative head strap, and say they just want to show you, then proceed to put it on your head.
Once there they try and charge you 6 DNR! and get quite arsey if you say no and take the stuff off.
And no it does not work if you say NO THANKYOU when they start approaching you, they insist you don’t know what they want. No doesn't seem to work anywhere, I’ll take a big pointy stick next time with NO! On a placard hanging off it.

Anyway, other than the pestering the rest of the holiday was great! There was a waiter at the bar in the hotel who was really nice and sat down and chatted and joked with us, in fact most of the waiters were nice!
Some nicked your change if you weren’t paying attention, but that didn't matter with the nicer ones (and they didn’t nick it anyway as we tended to let them have it).

There were two outdoor pools and one indoor pool (heated to bath temperature mmmmmmmmmmmm)
The beach was right behind the hotel which the waiters would go out to and would also bring pizza!
The sea was clear and a little cold in the first week but warmed up in the second.
There was paragliding on the beach, we went up together and took loads a piccs, almost got dumped in the sea when the boat turned around!
There was also jet skiing which was great!  I got the hang immediately and left d1550lu510n3d in my spray! heh heh. The waves were a little choppy so you had to hold on and just 'bounce' over the waves!
We also went snorkeling, the sea was nice and clear with white fisshies at the bottom, there was also a wierd fish/prawn type thing, i took a photo - if it comes out....
Ther were loadsa hermit crabs, right up to the water line so you had to be careful where you stepped. They were really funny! they reminded me of the crabs from 'Finding Nemo'  every time one crab - dragging it's new shell, would run into another crab, it would stick its claws out and side step around the other one. If I listened harder, I'm sure I would have heard them going 'ey! 'ey! 'ey! 'ey!'

The diving place was closed, BAH! thats what we get going just before peak season!
The horses were dragged up and down the beach, which reminded me of the donkeys at blackpool, so i didn't bother with them.

The food was adequate, a continental buffet for breakfast and dinner.
Breakfast was cheeses, meats, croissants and breads. There were cooked stuff like 'grilled' frankfurters, boiled eggs, lumpy watery scrambled egg stuff etc.
Dinner was also buffet style with an arrangement of pasta, a meat dish, veggie dish, fish dish, which varied each day.
A bit bland but still adequate.

We when on an excursion called the 'galleon cruise' in the 1st week, which was great. Until i got seasick.........meh! what a time to discover this!
I was fine when we set sail, there was a belly dancer on board and a few games were played. There was one where the 'captain' wanted to show us a magic trick by making 1 DNR into two.
He got a bowl and some water and put the coin in. he then got us all to stand around it saying silly magical words then got us all to get as close as possible, lying on our fronts with our faces near the bowl.
We had to put a strand of our hair in the bowl (a bald guy had to borrow a hair) and as we said 'allakazam' the captain slapped the bowl full of water, covering us all! BAH!
There was also fishing with bits of string, a hook and a nasty looking worm, all fish caught went to the hotel as food.
Then on the way back to port they had a BBQ, and the greenness began! I was ok until i got a whiff of food, then that was it, head over the side!

We then went on the 'desert adventure' which consisted of two days rather than the four day we were going to go on. We didn't want to take up too much time travelling so we went on the 2 day one which had the main bits still in it.
We went with one of the other couples, but i really don't think they enjoyed it as much.
We 1st stopped off in El Jem, where the roman amphitheatre was. It was very impressive and well preserved, we had to pay 1 DNR to take photos! The photos to follow soon!
We got to go all around it, the whole thing was built out of sandstone and you could still see the seashells in the brickwork!
There was still quite a lot of marble around as well, and if you went into the tunnels, you could see the deep scratches where the slaves used to sharpen their weapons!

The tour guide on the bus had this obsession with olive trees and palm trees,
'To the left are the olive trees, to the right are also olive trees.'
'To the left are the palm trees, palm trees produce dates. To make the palm trees produce lots of dates, we get the male flower and place it with the female flower to make more dates. To the right are also palm trees.'

We saw the place where the lunar landscapes were filmed, troglodyte caves where people had burrowed holes into the rock face and made their homes. It was very impressive, as they had a bathroom, a kitchen, living room and bedrooms, although you shared a bedroom until you married.
We went to Tataouine where we saw the set where star wars was filmed when Luke Skywalker was young, which again is built within a rock face and is currently a hotel!
I didn't know there were so many different types of desert as well! Obviously the Sahara conjures up images of miles and miles of fine sand, but there is also the rocky desert with mountains and so on.
We went on a Camel ride in the Sahara (which cost extra) they would take you into the desert and then tried to sell you a bottle of coke!
The camels were smelly and every time we stopped, they would just pee and poo constantly!
They would wee down their legs without taking any notice, except for one which almost squatted! Quite funny except to the poor sod clinging for life on his hump!
The camels were tied in twos, men were put at the front and women behind, i got the grumpy growly one that kept trying to push in front!
There was one guy with a baby fox, i felt soo sorry for the fox as it was on a lead and being dragged over the dunes.
the guy kept chucking the poor fox at people(even the ones obviously scared of it) then get another guy to take a photo which they would then try to charge you for.
They didn't come to me, that might be due to the evils i was giving them, and the fact I was planning on setting the poor thing free if they came near me!

Since we were now right in the south of Tunisia, they set up a hotel for us to stay in, which was no where near as nice as our own. There seemed to be a lot of Russians there which were evil and piled their plates high!
Plus it was the usual buffet, but the queue was out the door with evil selfish Russian people stealing all the food! I gave up after i got my starter and when to dessert as the queue for the main food was far too long. You'd think they were stuck out in the desert for the last week!

We got rudely awoken at 4am!!!!! To get back on the bus to go see the sunrise over the salt flats.
It was amazing! Freezing at first, but as the sun began to rise, it began to warm up quickly. The sun rose so quickly, that you had to keep watching or it would be up by about a cm if you turned away for a sec.
The ground was coated in crystallised salt which crunched under your feet. The whole place was pure white except for were there were pools of water, this was pinky red. Dunno why, but it was soo beautiful!

We then got on 4x4s (thank god, we spent all day in the bus on the way down and since 5 am that day) to go to the Oasis, it was so surprising to see so much greenery in the middle of the rocky desert.
There was a pool with a waterfall, palm trees everywhere (which the tour guide must have decided we had forgotten where dates came from).
We then went into a little town in Tozeur where we went on a horse and carriage around the Oasis there.
There was a comedy Tunisian guy there that had obviously learnt all his English through cockney slang, his phone went off and he just shouted 'fackin 'ell!' then proceeded to rant down the phone in his own language.

We went to this hotel for lunch, the hotel was gorgeous with extravagant decoration on the walls and on the roof, every thing was gold plated and decorated in minute detail.
There were rugs and tapestries every where with all the furniture made out of heavy solid wood.

The final stop off was at Kairouan to go see a carpet making place and a mosque, most of us were really not arsed about the carpet place, so we wondered over to the souks.
When we got back to the bus there were two girls missing, the tour guide wanted to dive over to the mosque and the bus was beginning to run late, so the guy insisted on taking the bus down to the mosque to drop people off then go back for the girls.
We all shouted 'NO' and to wait for the girls, imagine what it would feel like to get back and the bus has gone with no one about! Miles away from anywhere! In the end the bus went any way, but some of us stayed to make sure the bus when back straight away for the other two girls.
Which surprise surprise, were there wondering where the bus was! Luckily they had only been there about a minute or so, so thought they were in the wrong place or something!

We got back at about 7pm after 14 hrs travelling over 1200 km in total over two days! I never wanted to see another bus after that!

But hey, the next night we went on an excursion called the 'African night' which consisted of going to a zoo, lots of piccies, they seem to think gerbils are exotic! I suppose they are...
Then we had an evening meal with African and Tunisian dancers, which was great. very energetic and shouty!

We almost cancelled the next excursion as it meant another long trip in the bus to see Tunis, but we went in the end.
The only problem was that the weather hit 45C at this point and was absolutely boiling.
We were ducking into shops just to get out of the sun! Since this was the capital city, there were a lot of proper shops here.
The souks weren’t too bad as they were situated in tiny alleys where the sun struggled to get through, but you got hassled to hell!
I bought a belly dancing outfit, originally 135 DNR - paid 40! I figured if you thought of the lowest you can get away with then tried to walk, they would take it.
Tunis is the main city and reminds me of London, loadsa traffic, metro that runs down the middle with fancy hotels everywhere, yet little tourists.
Clothing was fairly normal and consisted of trousers rather than shorts and t-shirts.
I was wondering round in shorts and a strappy top so felt out of place....

We also went to Monastir and saw the Mausoleum where the previous president was buried, very quiet and the whole place was made of marble! You had to pay to take piccies so we used our mobiles!
We bought loadsa tat including singing camels, plus a bow and arrow set - no arrow tips, so got through customs!

On the day of our 6 yr anniversary, we went to port El Kantaoui which has a water park, not a big one, but it had a lazy river and a wave machine.
We then wondered over to a small shopping area where we bought an ornamental dagger, they wanted 85 DNR, we paid 26! Which we then found 5 DNR cheaper in the next stall!
We then got hideously lost, walked about a mile aimlessly and had to get a taxi driver to take us to the marina as that’s where we were heading, which ended up being behind the shops!
We went to a floating restaurant there (a boat) for an anniversary meal, which was nice. Except for another table, we were the only ones there!

There was a go-kart centre near the hotel which was great! The carts were very low to the ground and pretty quick! The problem was you got covered in black stuff when you finished!
d1550lu510n3d picked the newer looking go-kart and lapped me! Grumble, i was too short to reach the break and throttle so i had to stick my leg out whenever i wanted to go faster or slow.
Plus the steering mechanism was under my legs so it rubbed! BAH!

In the evenings, as alcohol is frowned upon, there isn't much to do except the hotel entertainment, which it would seem the entertainers were obsessed with putting d1550lu510n3d in a dress at every opportunity! I got some piccies but they all seem to have come out blurred on my mobile. I think he must have broken my mobile!

Overall we have been to all three points of Tunisia and have been within 50 km of both Libya and Algeria and travelled in total about 1500 km in 3 days (including the trip to Tunis) which is impressive for us!
I didn't tan for the first week, grr, but i seem to have made up for it in the second week when i downgraded from factor 12 to 8 then 5. I take it my skin still remembers my life in South Africa, I wish I had known that sooner!
It was all great, and we have over 8 films off to be processed, once they come back, they should also be put onto DVD so i should be able to upload them soon!
