Doctor Who and Mickey
Okay here's the thing- I've read some wonderfully insightful reviews of 'Turn Left' and the speculation I've seen for next week's episode has left my imagination spinning with possibilities, but the one thing I keep asking myself is, "What about Mickey?"
I understand the rules of the parallel worlds, but if Rose can come through why can't Mickey come too? He really has been one my favorite characters through out the series. His character development was slow, but rewarding. When we first meet him he tells the Doctor that he doesn't have it in him to travel with the Doctor and Rose. He doesn't believe in himself, and for that reason nobody around him believes in him either.
Mickey was consistently being put down by the other characters on the show as if he was not good enough, but through out the series Mickey proves himself to just as valuable as anyone else that travels with the Doctor. It is Mickey that saves Jackie from the Slitheen, and then hacks into the Navy computer and launches the missile that saves the day. He is also helped defeat the Cybermen in the parallel world by destroying the communication relay and deactivating the emotional inhibitors.
Mickey recognizes his worth only as the series progresses. In the beginning he was too scared to go with the Doctor, but during the second series he boldly declares he is not 'the tin dog' and asks to go along. By the time we reach the end of the second series we see that Mickey has all on his own infiltrated Torchwood London in effort to stop the Cybermen invasion. He stands bravely; ready to fight, in a room full of Daleks. This is a far cry from the Mickey we first meet in episode one that clung to Rose in fear of the living plastic.
I found it sad that just as Mickey finally found his place in the Whoverse he was banished to exile in a parallel world. I really hope to see him come back in this upcoming episode that promises to have just about every character and their mother appearing in it. I really don't think there enough Mickey love in the world!
