If it's anything, when I was in anesthesia-induced captivity my mother and I watched Arthur episodes back-to-back >_< (which is why I will never forget the theme song ever). (Not anime, but close enough.)
As for F. Sionil Jose... I've only read one short story book collection by him: "Puppy Love and Other Stories." Did they ever read the book they gave you and find out? (Sadly parents do not give me books - I would rather have the awkwardness and the books given than no books and no awkwardness, in theory.)
