Boys & Men
John didn’t look up when he heard footsteps coming around the side of the house.
“You can tell your sister to stop apologizing,” he said. “She did an amazing job organizing Torren’s party, he’s having a great time.”
“Unlike some people,” said Rodney, sitting beside him on the steps.
He didn’t say anything else, just stretched his legs down the porch stairs.
The warm breeze carried the sound of high-pitched laughter and faint music past them, and John sighed.
“It’s not even a rational fear,” he protested. “A clown is just a guy. A nice guy, I heard him talking to Kaleb when he got here. I fight Wraith and Replicators and evil crystal entities that look like me. How can I still be afraid of clowns?”
Rodney snorted a laugh. “You know what I think about psychology, Sheppard.”
John managed a smile. “Yeah, I know.”
“Anyway, Jeannie sent me to tell you that since the clown is only booked until three o’clock, she’s just going to let the kids run loose until then, and do the cake and presents after he’s gone.”
“I didn’t want to interrupt Torren’s party,” John began, but Rodney snorted again.
“Can’t you hear the shrieks of childish glee from here?” he asked. “At their age, I’m honestly not sure if even cake will be enough of a draw to get some of them to come out of the jumping castle.”
“You mean the bounce house.”
“Not in Canada, I don’t.”
“Hmm,” said John, then, “I’m fine by myself out here, you know.”
“And send me back out there to get roped into child-wrangling?” Rodney asked, mock-offended. “I don’t think so, Sheppard. Besides, while we’re here on Earth, don’t you want the chance to sit here on the front porch with a cute boy?”
“Well, sure. What time is he getting here?”
John laughed when Rodney thumped his shoulder.
“Well,” John repeated, “if a cute by did come by, I’d have to turn him down. I’ve already got myself a grumpy old man.”
“Who are you calling old?” Rodney grumbled, but he kissed John anyway.
