Here to Stay

“So,” said Jack, plunking himself on the other side of the workbench and picking up an artifact to play with. “Vala Mal Doran.”

Daniel didn’t look up. “What about her?”

“She’s back. And rumor has it, she’s here to stay.”

“Rumor?”

“Okay, Carter says. She also says that Vala’s going to be joining SG-1 and that you were the one who persuaded Landry to let her.”

Daniel scowled. “You know, back when you were just our commanding officer, Sam was much more willing to keep secrets for me.”

“Nah,” said Jack, easily. “It’s just that now that you and I don’t go off-world together, she doesn’t have to deal with the immediate consequences of telling me stuff you didn’t want me to know.”

“I’ll show her consequences,” Daniel muttered, but they both knew he didn’t mean it.

“So,” Jack repeated. He set the artifact down and picked up another one. “Vala Mal Doran.”

Daniel sighed. “What do you want to know?”

“Well, I was hoping we could start with the fact that you’re in love with her, but we can work up to that if you need more time.”

“What? I don’t - She’s so - Why would-?” He let out a long breath. “How did you know?”

“Oh, you got it bad, Danny-boy. You complain about this girl way too much not to like her.”

Daniel sighed again. “She’s all wrong for me. She lies, Jack, about everything, all the time. Everything she says is innuendo.”

“Sure,” said Jack. “But she’s smart and she’s tough and you’re already in deep, aren’t you?”

“I never meant to be! After Sha’re, losing her the way I did, I never thought I’d be able to take that risk again. But Vala…” Daniel frowned. “I just can’t be sure she means it. I don’t know what I’d do if I found out for sure that she didn’t.”

Jack put the artifact down. “So, to keep from knowing one way or another, you’re just going to make yourself and her miserable.”

“I don’t-”

“Look, Daniel, I’ve never talked to her, and I certainly can’t know what’s going on inside her head. But I do know that nobody would voluntarily spend that much with you if they didn’t like you.”

“Yes, I suppose that’s…” said Daniel, then he frowned. “Hey!”

Jack grinned and patted his shoulder. “Go get ‘er, Tiger!”
