House Hunting
It was the eleventh house they had looked at, and it had no more personality than the previous ten.
"I didn't think it was going to be this hard," said Abby, when they had thanked the real estate agent and gotten back in the car. "We're not looking for anything out of the ordinary. Just as single-family house, three or four bedrooms..."
"...a nice yard..."
"...a room we can make your office, maybe a basement we could turn into a lab..."
"...someplace old enough to have character, but new enough that we can make it environmentally sound..."
"...and an attic, too, especially one with a real staircase..."
Abby and McGee looked at each other. "Maybe we are making it a bit difficult," said McGee, with a wry smile.
"Yeah, maybe- Oh, Timmy, look!"
He stopped the car and followed her gaze to a house on the end of the street. It was a Victorian design, clearly well kept until very recently. Two of the first floor shutters hung at odd angles and there was paint peeling from the gingerbread trim, but it appeared to be a sturdy structure.
McGee didn't even offer a token protest when Abby asked him to pick the lock on the gate, and they walked through the old house in awe.
It had four bedrooms, all with wood moldings. The main staircase was also wood, it's finish peeling but otherwise undamaged. Smaller staircases led to the large attic and basement, and a wrap-around porch looked out onto an overgrown but spacious backyard.
There would be some serious work involved- windows would need to be replaced, trim repaired, and just about every room needed repainting- but both could see that the place had definite potential.
Abby and McGee turned back to each other and grinned.
"This one."
