Ergotism

“Gibbs, Gibbs, Gibbs,” said Abby, skidding to a stop at his desk. “I know what killed Lieutenant Dalton!”

He arched an eyebrow. “Besides Mrs. Dalton?”

“Okay, not what but why.” Abby paused, dramatically. “Sowing wild oats.”

“I didn’t know women did that,” smirked Tony.

“Of course they do,” she told him. “But in this case, it’s literal. Claviceps purpurea, the ergot fungi. It’s rare on oats, but that’s what the Daltons were growing in their yard, all organic. I tested the oatmeal from their kitchen and Ducky reran her bloodwork, and they were both positive.”

Gibbs smiled. “Good work, Abs.”

THE END

Note(s): ergotism is the name for the condition that develops after a person eats grain contaminated by Claviceps purpurea, which can cause a whole list of nasty symptoms, including potentially-dangerous mania and psychosis.
