“Come on!” said Myka, starting back toward their car. “We need to catch them before they wreak complete havoc on downtown.”
“Why is it always havoc that’s getting wreaked, though,” asked Pete, as he put on his seat belt and she started the engine. Then, he paused. “Wreaked? Wrought?”
“Wreaked is correct,” said Myka - she was oddly more patient when she was driving. “Wrought is actually an old past tense form of the verb work.”
“Huh. But what about the havoc part? Couldn’t I wreak anything else?”
“I suppose you could,” his partner allowed. “But the word does have a negative connotation. So maybe you could wreak destruction or vengeance, but not, say, a birthday party. And it’s usually used for something more abstract, so even if you did wreak a party, you wouldn’t wreak a birthday cake.”
“Huh,” Pete said again. “English is a very confusing language.”
“Yes, it is,” agreed Myka. “Hold on.”
And Pete grabbed the door handle just as she made a pretty spectacular left turn across four lanes of traffic.
