Substantial in size, but maybe not content

New Years wasn't anything too exciting, but it's never been a huge deal to me. Although yay for having someone to kiss! We never got around to planning anything, so Matt and I just went to a nice dinner (oysters, cheese & charcuterie, beef medallions & brussel sprouts, chocolate cake...maybe pics later), and then back to his place. We thought we'd ( Read more... )

I know what you mean. When I'm unorganized, I end up just living in my own filth and I have no motivation to even try to clean it. The last few day, though, everyone has been pitching in to get our home back the way it should be.

It was more a necessity to be able to play the wii in the living room, but it got us working toward a cleaner and more organized kitchen and bedroom, too.

I want to do one of those big purges where I take everything out of the closet, put it in give away/throw away/keep piles and reduce the amount of clutter. If I don't do that at least every six months, I find that I become the worst pack rat. I make myself look at the piles of stuff sitting around and finding something to DO with all that stuff.

It's just hard to look at what a huge job it is and then actually get started on it. So instead I look at it, and then just sit on the couch.

I've already done some purges, so I doubt there's really anymore for me to get rid of. We had a big garage sale last year, and I got rid of a ton of stuff just when I was packing the uhaul to get here. I've always been a pack rat, but Katrina made me a lot better about that, just the realization that you don't actually NEED things. KM probably has stuff she could give away, but that's not my call.

Well, maybe a trip to The Container Store or even Lowes would help you get ideas for organizing. In the past you've posted great ideas for storage for your jewelry and shoes that were inspiring.

I haven't done it yet, but I read about the project management system where you only do the work for 15 minutes at a time. Then you stop. The idea, I think, is that you can do just about anything for 15 minutes.

Maybe that will help.

like i said, already have a wardrobe and shelving unit picked out from IKEA. also have a DVD shelf on the way. that won't organize everything, but it's a start. the container store gave me ideas, but we don't really have the room for much more in the way of furniture, and at their prices i really can't make the investment anyway. a lot of the idea as to what needs to be done is there...it's actually getting it done that is the bigger problem.

and yeah, i think quick spurts can work. like if you do one thing at a time, like just clean off the table or empty the dishwasher. every little bit helps kind of mentality. only problem is that some of the tasks ahead are definitely multi-hour type things. and i get distracted enough with my ADD, i'm not sure how beneficial it will be to schedule in the distractions.
