The whole writing/typing nonsense has never worked for me. And I am pretty much incapable of turning off my internet.
I almost always do my best work if I do the first draft by hand. I am basically incapable of turning off my internet, so if I'm on the computer, I find reasons to go off and start researching the mechanics of tiny little details that really don't matter right this second.
I'm the exact opposite, actually - I find the internet extremely distracting as well, but I also can't focus writing stuff by hand. Also, since much of my writing is quite long (multiple dozens of chapters etc.), there comes a point when doing it by hand becomes impractical. I've occasionally taken the step described above of turning off my router, but I then invariably have to go into another room away from the router, or I'll be too tempted to turn it back on.
Where's the "love this" button when you need it? I have to say though too, this is oddly inspiring. Man, it also makes me wish I had the time for this kind of dedication.
Though I'm no fan of Facebook, I've often wished there was a "like" button on LJ. ;) This would definitely be a candidate for such a button!
And yes, inspiring for sure. :) Since 2007 I haven't really been in a position where doing NaNo would work for me (I've either been in school, too busy with work or too busy with other projects), but I hope to tackle it someday.
