No one ever said the holidays had to be healthy. Go Rodney!

He's ain't a scrooge, he just takes great pleasure in reminding everyone of it's pagan origins. *grin*

Neener.

I like! Mostly people just say "Rodney hates Christmas, grr!", but this twist on it was so much better. My second favorite holiday story ever.

(Rivier's x-mas story had porn, so she beats you.)

Question I've been wondering for the last few weeks: what exactly are latkes?

Latkes are potato pancakes, round and crisp. Some people like them on the thick & soft side, but those people are *weird*. They can also be made with other vegetables -- sweet potato, zucchini, carrot -- but the important point is the frying. Traditionally eaten with applesauce (mmmmmm) or, for those with no shred of mercy for their arteries, sour cream.

Amireal, great story, & I'm glad *someone* wrote it. Actually I'm surprised that John, much less Elizabeth, isn't aware that there are non-Christians on Atlantis, but then I was really surprised at the "The only reason Rodney wouldn't like Christmas is cuz he's Scrooge" story I saw, because I thought people on LJ were more aware of the big world than that. (The author of the story we're both thinking of gets a teeny bit of slack IMHO for being a Brit, for whom Christmas is apparently a wholly secular holiday. Or something.)

I stretched a bit on Liz and I'm aware, but I've gotta admit, Rodney even says it, inclusions would have felt very half hearted and half assed. There's nothing like one small menora amidst a see of red and green.

John, well, mostly I don't see as a big christmas fan either, but I made him reactionary to Rodney.

And oddly, awareness doesn't always breed *awareness*.

inclusions would have felt very half hearted and half assed.

They certainly *can* be, but I don't think they have to be. To make inclusion work, you have to be pretty upfront about the "Pagan Solstice Celebration" thing. Or at least (as in our public school district, which includes many children from Hindu, Buddhist, and Neo-Pagan families, as well as being around 20-25% Jewish) put so many religious symbols in the pot that the inclusion doesn't seem so grudging.

Did you ever see the old "30-something" Christmas/Hanukkah episode? Best treatment of the issue *ever* on TV, IMHO.

Yes, I confess, our household gets a tree, but I insist on calling it a "Yule Tree" or a "Solstice Tree", and we decorate the top with a sun.

And oddly, awareness doesn't always breed *awareness*.

No kidding.

This was a great antidote to the relentless Christmas syrup of 'Rodney's a Grinch'. And a nicely done reminder that even if it's the biggest single religion, a very considerable part of the world isn't Christian.

(Though I'd hope Elizabeth would manage to be a little more culturally aware than she seems to be here.)

As I stated in another comment, I sort of went in aware that she'd be the one sticking point. But Rodney even says it, inclusions would have felt very half hearted and half assed. There's nothing like one small menora amidst a see of red and green.

Also, heh. Thanks for reading and totally getting what I was attempting to express on 3 hours of sleep :)
