an update on the situation with medical "conscience objection" and the dangers introduced by the DHHS's new position. She also has excellent links to previous situations with extreme refusal of care that could become legal with the new systems. With the choice of the incredibly anti-choice Palin as anti-choice McCain's running mate, this becomes an even bigger issue;
as I have posted before, I believe it is critical not to go into the next administration--choice friendly or unfriendly as it may be--with laws that so greatly restrict women's access to adequate health care.
Please, if you can, WRITE.
ETA: As a note, this change in the law and wording of it is a new provision that is in addition to already-existing federal laws that protect the jobs of health care professionals who object to performing certain procedures on grounds of conscience; this law targets women's health issues, deliberately makes access to all kinds of healthcare more difficult for women to obtain.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a 30-day period to consider public input on this issue before making a final decision.
You have the option to contact the DHHS today and tell them not to put this into effect and that you oppose any proposal that jeopardizes access to basic women's health, including birth control. The HHS main phone number is 202-619-0257.
