The first time they meet in Watanuki's world, Tomoyo Daidouji is six to Nokoru Imonoyama's nine. They were at a charity function mingling absentmindedly with kids their age when they first came face to face with one another. Nokoru had smiled at her, charming and gallant in his manner as they spoke. Then, in the straightforward manner of all young children, she cupped his cheek.
"You're loonely, aren't you?"
First he started, then he looked at her--really looked at her. His eyes darkened with the weight of what he saw, and he caught her hand and kissed her palm.
"I think we're one and the same, Tomoyo-jyou."
Something shifts within both children, but Tomoyo's mother separates them before it can settle. The next time they meet, two years later, that something remains dormant because Nokoru's smile is genuine and Tomoyo's laughter is bright as never before.
"I'm glad you found someone." She whispers in their ear as they finish dessert. His hand brushes her own and Nokoru winks at her before striding to the podium to deliver his speech.
"It's nice to care for someone, isn't it, Daidouji-san?"
The question is his greeting when they are finally allowed to mingle, and she laughs--clear tinkling bells to the ear--and nods. He passes her a piece of paper and she opens it, unsurprised to find a remarkably detailed sketch of herself with her friend. Nokoru's plain, unblemished hiiragana spelling out "Tomoyo-jyou and Sakura-hime" beneath the simple scene.
"So, those rumors of your artistic mis-talent?"
"Mostly untrue, I merely require proper inspiration."
Four years later, Sakura has Syaoran and Suoh has Nagisa, and neither of them are particularly sure how to feel.
