She was a hairsbreadth from passing out when she hit the water, the force of the fall further stunning her. If the water had been colder, she might have remembered, instantly, that she should get rid of all her equipment before it dragged her to the depths. Instead, most of the air was driven from her lungs as the velocity and inertia of her fall instantly plunged her ten feet below the surface.
And the water was warm, that sort of perfect just-over-twenty-nine-degrees warmth that makes you feel as though you’re floating in the warmth of your own blankets at home. A small voice in her head acknowledged that she had probably been in shock even before she fell into the stupid uber-huge bathtub that was the sea. Hazily, she watched as the light at the top of the water slowly became more concentrated, the world around her growing darker as her fingers began fiddling with the straps of her gauntlets. Then the sight of everything around her bore into her retinas and her hands stilled.
It was surreal. Everything was beautiful; she was floating in a world of crystal. The water was clear, filtering light through a rather intense sapphire blue. A woosh of air slipped out of her lungs, and she watched the bubbles go up with the vague notion that it was the last of her air. The cloudiness of her mind persisted even as she felt her body attempt to breath, water rushing into her lungs. There was the distinct taste of salt and metal in her mouth, and the intense pain that started in her trachea and branched out to the smallest of her bronchi. Somehow the fact that she still felt like she was floating, even as her body started convulsing, made it completely clear in her mind.
This was it, she was going to die.
Funny, she thought as her eyes fluttered shut, her body convulsing. I thought I was supposed to see my life flash by, not that stupid chocobo-head.
The next thing she knew, someone was kissing her and she was totally about to give him a piece of her mind when her stomach heaved and she started barfing. Warm hands helped her roll to her side, holding her up and tilting her head to the side so she wasn’t puking on herself, at least, even though most of what was coming out just looked, smelled, and tasted like nasty seawater. A quiet mutter beside her ear and a full-cure blazed through her body, making her fingers burn with heat and the ache in her throat, stomach, and lungs disappear.
The magic did nothing about the seawater she was still expelling from her body. With one last heave, she was done and she collapsed into the warm body behind her. For a moment, she indulged in the care he was giving her. With a sigh she flicked the arm around her waist; she didn’t need to look at him to know that Cloud was still pretty worried about her.
“Fuck, Spikes,” despite the obviously generous-because her skin was still tingling from the after effects of the full-cure-use of materia, her voice was still rather choked and gravelly. “You’re supposed to ask me out before going for the kiss.”
She felt him relax when she said that, understanding her unspoken confirmation that she was fine, that it was just another little lump. She got sidetracked by an attempt at a mental tally of how often she had died, then promptly blushed once she processed his response.
“Is that a challenge, lady ninja?”
“…I’m totally siccing Vincent on you.”
“You’ll have to wait until we get to Neo-Midgar.”
“Fine! I’ll just call Teefs.”
There was a moment of silence, then Cloud chuckled and ran his hands through her hair.
“I’m glad you’re okay, brat,” he scooped her up, making a valiant effort not to snicker at her indignant squack. “Guess it’s time to bring you home before Vincent and Reeve collaborate to kick my ass.”
