Cat in a bag

A few weeks ago we discovered that my oldest cat Pancho has chronic kidney failure. He's 14 years old and he's never been sick before, so when he started losing his appetite, we knew something was up. The vet took some blood tests, and then told us that he probably only had about 30% function in his kidneys, because it's usually at that stage of ( Read more... )

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that Pancho has CRF. My youngest has it too (or rather, he's at the early stages of renal insufficiency, instead of failure). We found out earlier this year and it was quite upsetting.

If Pancho decides that K/D food is not his thing, you can try doing a 2/3 K/D 1/3 Wellness (chicken or turkey formula) for wet food. Our vet recommended that we add wheat grass and fish oil into the diet as well. Not sure if this actually works, but Moochie's responded well to the overall treatment.

Good luck!

Thanks for the thoughts. At first he didn't like the KD diet, then all of a sudden decided it was the best thing on earth. So weird, this cat.

But my mum tried the Royal Canin renal diet, and he likes that even better. Hm, I should tell my mum about the wheat grass and fish oil. Where do you buy yours and how much do you mix in?

Oh! Where does your mother get the Royal Canin renal diet? Our vet doesn't have it, and we really don't like the Hill's formula (too much by products).

Wheatgrass you can get from supermarkets or plant your own. I take a handful, snip into small pieces and mix it with the wet food. I got Omega 3 fish oil from GNC. The capsule is too big to just pop into a cat, so I make a cut in the capsule and squeeze the contents onto wet food. One capsule every 1-2 days, depending on how kitty takes to it.

Hope that helps!

We get it from one of the vets at Sunset way. It's the dry food though!

Cool, I'll see what we can do about the wheat grass and fish oil. See if Pancho takes to it!

That is one adorable mode of cat transportation! Glad he's responding well to the treatment, what a trooper.

That pet carrier is super super adorable. And I just love the look of curiosity that Pancho has. I'm glad that he's doing well :-)
