Perhaps the age old pagan philosophy of "Do what you will so long as it doesn't harm others."
But when everyone lives on top of eachother it's hard not to hurt one another.
I think morals depends largely on the individual. Part of being moral is being able to live with yourself. If you are selfless and giving to other people, it is because that is the way you are, and to be selfish and uncompassionate would bring you more heartache than pleasure. In this way not looking out for yourself is in fact looking out for yourself.
However, you might also have a priority to self preservation. This is nothing to be ashamed of. However, you may from time to time have regrets for the loads you could not bare. Regret is also natural. But once you are done regretting what you could not achieve, ask yourself, "What can I achieve? How can I best use the resources I have alotted myself?"
Forgive me if that seems overly philosophical. I just finished reading some Gibran.
