I just checked Fanfiction.net for Final Fantasy IX and was surprised to see how little fanfics there are for it compared to FFVII and FFVIII. Okay, VII is insanely popular and VIII also had a big following, but personally I loved IX a lot as well. I liked it better than VIII and kept me interested throughout, not just at parts of it. Perhaps it is

I agree, X was too constrictive. I loved the graphics and I did find myself engaged by the characters, but there was no freedom.

Though I haven't been to ff.net in an insanely long time, I remember thinking the EXACT same thing you're thinking about the size of ffix category in comparison the sizes of vii, viii, & x. I wondered too why there was such a size difference, but I guess you're right - that the characters from the other games are more popular. ffvii & ffviii are really the only ones I've played enough (I got into the series more recently), and while some people were telling me to skip ix, I wouldn't do that. I think it looks too cool. =D
