The president's base does not believe that their tax money is responsible for 100% of the assesed damage in New Orleans. Bush's writers are paid to speak to the majority, the people who decide elections, and so the speech should reflect the majority of the population.

So, I don't really think it's "out of sight, out of mind" so to speak... I just think that a lot of people don't care about New Orleans. Of course that's their perogative, I mean I don't give money to every homeless man I see either.

Just because the storm wrecked things fast doesn't mean it will be a quick fix. Patience is a tough, tough thing to wish on anyone, but things need to be done right, methodically and thoughtfully.

We could have had the army descend on the area and build crappy apartments in no time, but no one wants that.

i don't disagree with you there. i know it's a slow haul; i'm just saying that whatever money has been given isn't enough. it makes me wonder where it's going...

Katrina was and still is a huge deal. I know some people who did a lot of the work with some of the large churches that are still sending people to help and giving money. The government cant pay for the whole thing, and New Orleans is depending on a lot of donations, and I think that you guys wont be lacking in help when spring/summer rolls around. The Lutheran help fund already is sending tons of people - they have them lined up for the next year or two, and they are still recruiting specialized help. I dont think money is the big issue. I think its being sure that the economy grows in the area when things are rebuilt.

One thing I was surprised at was when I did my taxes this year, there are deductions you can take if you were affected by the hurricane or even if you just helped out victims.
