Oh, and several college programs require portfolios, or else some sign that you have mastered your subject (besides just a test or turning in homework). A great example of this is student teaching. College students wanting to become teachers actually practice their future profession! Wow! Now, this is still graded, but its graded using a set of standards rather than an arbitrary test; your grade also comes from your supervisor with input from your cooperating teacher. Not a perfect system, but it is not that bad.

Grades can often be misinterpretation's of someone's intelligence; Newton did really poor in school until he chastised his bully.

Plus, if you can't get the grades yourself, you make yourself friends with the ones who can. The smartest girl in the class is also the most popular. But, if she wouldn't give out answers/help, she'd be as unpopular as, well, me.

I disagree even tho that would mean turning this into a discussion about popularity. theartfuldoger1 August 8 2006, 21:12:58 UTC
If you are implying cheating I wouldn't know because I've never been close to anyone who exchanges answers for popularity. As far as that works, it doesn't, smart people are popular because of their personalities which are very strong.

I'm not saying it works for all cases; only the ones I've seen.

Not necessarily cheating, but group discussion. I'm the one who works alone; the others talk amongst themselves about stuff, the class being discussed about 60% of the time. Stuff like, "Hey, I didn't understand problem (x), could you tell me what you got?" then a discussion would ensue as to how to get the answer to that problem. Me, I rely on me, plain and simple. Getting good grades isn't as important as knowing the material/practices.

You also mustn't make the mistake of not knowing the difference in "intelligent" and "knowledgeable". Furthermore, there are different kinds of intelligences; some, however, are more obvious than others.
