Actually the race for the egg is not entirely accurate. New evidence suggests that it is actually the egg that "decides" (by means of excreting a chemical which allows the egg "shell" to be penetrated) which sperm will penetrate, so it's not just whoever gets there first. Also, not all sperm goes at onces. It's actually believed that sperm is sent in kind of "shifts" over a course of a few days until the sperm is gone or the egg is fertilized.
