I liked your thoughts. And I agree with you about Dean's guilt and 'self-centered-ness' stemming from his (messed up) childhood. You explained very well to me.
I also enjoyed the episode, but I could see the 'trying to hard' moments--some were just overly cheesy.
Yes! I love how the show has taken the time over the years to really play out both how this developed in the first place and how it effects the present, and not just in woobie!Dean ways but in messy human ways, without simplifying it down to just ~daddy issues. It's one of the best things the show has done. It's not an easy thing to show the negative side of over-responsibility.
SO FASCINATING TO WATCH. It makes sense, this idea that we don't always change or overcome our programming in a linear fashion. We regress. I guess this is why I don't see the Sam and Dean conflict as "manufactured" or OOC either. Shit happen and things we thought we'd worked out or it turns out only worked out partway come undone. AUGH SHOW.
I think it's one of the things fandom struggles with is the difference between that damaged over-responsibility and the OTP kind of devotion.
OH wow yes this, thank you, a-ha moment. That makes so much sense. I DID IT ALL FOR YOUUUU.
What I love about the conflict is how Sam and Dean have been trying to work out all of this stuff since the show began, and it's not a linear thing, it's not an after school special, it can be hurtful and awful. There's a lot of damage there on both sides, the damage done to them and the damage they've done to each other and where those two things rub raw.
