No, really, NEVER LET ME TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE THING, I WILL INFODUMP FOR HOURS AND IT WILL SUCK.
But anyway… I'm putting up a kink meme tonight, and because I realized that a lot of people probably have no earthly idea what chubby!kink is or what it's all about in the first damn place, I started writing an explanation and a "brief" taxonomy of related kinks and manifestations of chubby!kink.
And because I'm me and I can't shut up to save my fucking life, it got rather long (though still brief by my standards) so in the interests of not boring people to death on the main post (and in the interests of not having to eventually make a separate post for the master list of fills because I'm lazy), I'm putting all the explanatory stuff in a separate post. Namely, this post.
Well. That's about all I have to say for myself, so let's get on with it, huh?
So, first off: like I've said in the main post of the kink meme that I'm going to get posted tonight (somehow), the main idea of chubby!kink is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. The whole idea is that one or more of the characters involved is/are overweight and the fic thinks that it's really hot. Not all chubby!kink fic involves shipping and pairings, but a lot do, so almost all of the examples in my taxonomy here involve references to and an assumption of shippy things going on. That being said, it's completely possible to write gen chubby!kink fic and there's a lot of gen chubby!kink fic out there if you look in the right places.
And just to clear up some terminology really quickly… "chubby" is the general way of referring to this kink; I don't know the reason why since it was in vogue and common practice before I stumbled into fannish chubby!kink circles and found a bunch of likeminded, similar kink-having people to hang out with. Personally, I think it's probably something like, "well, 'chubby' gets the point across really well and it's descriptive without having the negative connotations and social baggage that terms like, 'fat,' 'obese,' and, 'overweight' have; plus, 'chubby' encompasses more potential weights (since you can reasonably call a lot of people of a lot of different body types and weights chubby), and it sounds a lot cuter and more positive than more medical terms like, 'obese' and, 'overweight'"-but that's all a bunch of guesswork really and I haven't done any fannish chubby!kink census or survey or whatever to go, "so what words do you use and why." At this point, "chubby" is probably the most commonly used word… because everybody already uses it so we all know what it means and what it's referring to and stuff.
That said, there are some gradations and nuances and other terms that get used occasionally, based on things like who weighs how much or whatever. These nuances vary a lot from person to person, but the general trend I've noticed and participated in is that, "chubby" generally covers all of the possible weights up to a certain point where people might start to get personally squicked out with how fat the characters are and how much they weigh. Generally, the unspoken upper limit on, "chubby" falls somewhere in the realm of 350 to 400 pounds (these being really common limits for what people are willing to read and write).
Past that point, people start using terms like, "fat!character name here" or "obese!character name here" as a way to indicate to potential readers (or fillers, in the case of prompts) that they really do want their characters to follow the, "bigger is better" maxim. It's also common for people to specify particular upper limits of how big they'd like a character to be (e.g., "no 500 lbs," "no more than 400 lbs," etc.), and in a similar though somewhat less common vein, sometimes people will use the specific weights in their headers (e.g., 500 pound!Dean). It's also common practice to note things like particular body types or which body parts might be given more attention in a fic (e.g., pear-shaped!Scott, beer belly!Derek, ass-worship, etc.) or the roles that characters might play in a fic (e.g., feedee!Stiles, chaser!Danny, feeder!Allison, etc).
Personally, I tend to go on a case by case basis with my fics and headers, and only really deviate from, "chubby" if I think I'm really pushing the limit of what some people might be willing to read (such as with my Dean/Cas fic, "Don't Even Bother" where Dean stops gaining at around 350, 360 pounds and Cas goes well into the four-hundreds eventually and… yeah, people can get squicked at that point, so I started going, "obese!Dean" and, "obese!Cas" instead just so readers knew what they were getting into). And for the purposes of this post, I'm really not going to deviate from, "chubby" except in specific cases, like when I'm referring to roles in a feeder/feedee relationship or a few times when I use the phrases, "gainer" and, "non-gaining partner."
So. With that out of the way: Although there are many different aspects of the kink to focus on, both physically and emotionally/psychologically, in a chubby!kink fic, the
erotic focus (to borrow a term from Kink Bingo and KB mod thingswithwings) rests primarily on the chubby character's weight and body, on how their body looks and feels at their weight, changes to their body that come from gaining weight, the process of how they gain the weight and their feelings about it, the chubby character and/or their partner(s) getting off on the chubby character's body and their weight, and so on and so forth. Like the name implies, the kink here is chubbiness, plumpness, fatness; the heart and lowest common denominator of the kink, regardless of the different manifestations of it and ways of doing the kink, are taking characters and imagining them with bodies and body types that are other than skinny, lean and toned, or shredded like a Julienne salad, then eroticizing the fact that the characters are chubby.
And now for the fun part. Note that this list isn't really going to explain why these kinks appeal to people; different kinks appeal to different people for wildly different reasons, so I'm just going to stick to listing the kinks and naming them and explaining what they are and offering some illustrative examples. But with that being said. Some sub-kinks of and related kinks to chubby!kink include (but are not limited to):
- weight gain (this also does exactly what it says on the tin, pretty much: one or more of the characters involved gains weight, whether accidentally, on purpose, or being forced into it, through pretty much any means you can imagine and at any speed; accidental and/or oblivious weight gain is a popular subset of the trope, where someone gains weight without meaning to and/or is oblivious to or in denial about their weight gain; when more than one character gains weight in a fic or fanwork, it's called mutual weight gain, but most fics only feature one gainer character.
Some common weight gain tropes include but aren't limited to: gaining weight after an injury or because of some side-effect of their medications for things; domestic bliss leading to letting down your guard and coming to embody the idea of, "fat and happy"; characters reacting negatively to their weight gain and attempting to resist it, but their attempts at dieting backfire and lead to them gaining more weight; different magical, science-fiction, or urban fantasy woowoo means of inducing weight gain [potions, hexes, magical items or pills and stuff that are basically science magic, things that basically boil down to the explanation, "a wizard did it," etc.; for example, a staple phrase of magical weight gain in the SPN fandom is, "Dean really hated witches"]; outsider reactions to another character's weight gain, as in OCs observing the character in some kind of setting or a Character B who hasn't seen Character A in a while and in the time they've been apart, Character A has gained a lot of weight; rapid weight gain and the side-effects thereof, both magically induced and not; characters outgrowing their clothes and trying to squeeze into things that don't fit them anymore, to many different results; characters gaining the freshman fifteen and then some when they go off to college, whether it's a college AU or not; characters gaining weight during the winter holidays and dealing with the repercussions and side-effects when spring comes around; characters gaining weight on vacation, especially on cruises; weight gain due to emotional overeating [usually stress or depression, sometimes both, occasionally grief]; characters being insecure about their weight gain and getting comforted; and so many more other possibilities); - feed(er)ism (a particular kink that's often a sub-kink of weight gain but doesn't have to be, feedism/feederism rests on one character, the feeder, feeding the other, the feedee, and encouraging the feedee to eat more even when they think they're full, continually push their limits, and so on, usually with the result of the feedee gaining weight, though not always. Sometimes, the feeder character takes control of the feedee's diet, like preparing the food for them, telling them what to eat and when to eat it, etc., and while this is often a consensual arrangement between the feeder and the feedee, it doesn't need to be. Other times, the feeder character feeds their feedee ~secretly for whatever reason you want, as in covertly giving the feedee larger portions or encouraging them to eat more with excuses, toying with the feedee's food in order to make it more caloric and more fattening, etc.; this often leads to the feedee finding out what's going on and usually consenting to being fed in such a way going forward, but this isn't necessary.
Despite some similarities in how they work and some shared features like safe-words, the mutually consensual feeder/feedee relationship isn't necessarily a Dom/sub relationship and in cases where they might intersect, the feeder isn't necessarily the Dom and the feedee isn't necessarily the sub. Likewise, in the same way that the concept of, "mutually subby OTPs" or, "mutually switchy OTPs" has started gaining some traction in discussion of D/s headcanons, two people in a feeder/feedee relationship don't need to be limited to one role or the other; a relationship can be mutually feeding, with both characters playing both roles to each other, and when you start to factor polyamorous relationships into things, the possibilities are infinite.
A popular focus in feeder fics is a sort of hurt/comfort angle, wherein the feeder character wants to love and take care of the feedee character and does so by making them food and/or looking after their diet, and a popular sub-trope is having the feeder character start to gain weight as well during the feeding process. IRL, feederism/feedism very specifically refers to a sexual sub-culture centered around feeding and weight gain, but in fiction and fanworks, characters do not need to explicitly identify as feeders or feedees in order to have the fic be a feeder fic or a fic that plays to feeder-related kinks, much in the same way that someone can write an id fic fantasy that plays on BDSM-related kinks but isn't actually a depiction of BDSM.
And a note on terminology: "feedism" and "feederism" are generally used interchangeably, but some people prefer, "feedism" because a popular strain of anti-feed(er)ism discourse paints all feeders as manipulative, abusive predators and completely ignores the fact that feedees have choice and agency in their lives and these scenarios, and the fact that many feedees are the ones who want to gain weight and bring it up with their partners first. "Feederism," these folks argue, places an undue amount of focus on the feeder and ignores the feedee's existence and their role in the relationship. For strictly meme-related purposes, both terms are acceptable); - the "I love you for you" angle (not necessarily an inverse to or mutually exclusive with feed(er)ism since they can, and often do, go together in fics and fanworks… but some people aren't entirely fond of one partner in a fic having a chubby kink, being a chubby chaser, being a feeder, etc., otherwise getting off on their partner('s)' weight. Some people prefer for the non-gaining partner's attitude to be more like, "I don't care whether you're fat or not; if you want to lose weight, then I'll help you with that, but if you don't, then you don't have to change for me or worry about me not being attracted to you because you gained weight because I love you for you no matter what you weigh" angle. It's worth noting that having a chubby kink, being a feeder, etc. doesn't invalidate someone's love for their partner(s) or mean that they ~only love their partner(s) for their weight, but some people just like this angle on non-gaining partners' reactions better and it does play to common desires for things like hurt/comfort and feeling loved and stuff);
- feeding (the bread and butter of feed(er)ism, but not always related to it, feeding… is really pretty self-explanatory: for whatever reason you can dream up, one or more characters end up getting fed. This can be direct and literal feeding [as in, spoon-feeding someone ice cream or putting the Oreos in their mouth for them] or it can be more indirect [as in, preparing someone's food for them, coming up with their meal plans, etc.]. The reason I list these two things separately is so I can specifically address a common sub-kink of feeding, namely: force-feeding. Which… is also pretty self-explanatory: for whatever reason suits your fancy and tickles your pickle, the character being fed is fed more than they want and more than they can handle and they're not allowed to let up until their feeder says so.
Despite the name, force-feeding isn't always non-consensual. It usually is, with a common trope being "Hansel and Gretel" stories wherein character(s) get kidnapped and one or more of them get fattened up for whatever reason, but force-feeding can also be completely consensual [as in, a feedee agreeing to eat until they either safe-word out or their feeder says that they're done because they enjoy pushing their limits like that, and when they hit the point of being too full to move and too full to feed themself, their feeder takes over and literally feeds them, forcing the food on them until they're done or they safe-word out] or some shade of dub-con [such as the, "Bruce Bogtrotter eats a gigantic fucking cake" scene in Matilda, where yes, Bruce Bogtrotter technically agrees to eat the cake in front of the whole school, but he only agrees to one piece at first before the Trunchbull makes him eat the whole thing, and she straight up emotionally manipulates him into consenting through different means, and even if neither of those things were true, she's still his Headmistress and he's still like twelve years old or something so she's in at least two positions of power over him that would seriously limit his ability to completely consent without any shades of being influenced].
Also, if you're into grimdark fic, there is a popular grimdark trope where the, "Hansel and Gretel" trope is taken to its logical extreme conclusion, i.e. vore, so the character who's done the feeding eats the character who's been fed and fattened up. This usually isn't consensual, but there's no rule that says that you can't write loving, consensual vore and I'm sure someone out there has probably tried. And if they haven't, then the fact that I've said the thing means that they are now more likely to do so because that's just how the Internet works); - stuffing (often a subset of feeding, but not necessarily so, stuffing as a kinky concept just generally refers to someone eating until the point that they are, "stuffed," i.e., they eat past the point of being full, they push their limits a lot, they probably make themself some degree of uncomfortable but in a good, satisfying sort of way, and so on. And it's usually done with a feeder, sure, but the feeder isn't necessary at all);
- inflation (technically, this kink isn't really related to chubbiness as such. like, characters in inflation type scenarios can want to gain weight and get chubby, or they can already be chubby, but the erotic focus of an inflation fic isn't usually on the weight or the gaining of it as much as it's on the short-term distortion of people's bodies through different means. I'll admit that inflation isn't really my thing so I don't know that much about it, but the Kink Bingo wiki entry on the subject is very informative and it's a quick read though there's always the risk of just spending several hours reading every entry on the Kink Bingo wiki what why are you looking at me like that haaaa ha ha ha I've definitely never wasted an entire afternoon just reading Kink Bingo wiki entries why would you think that nope not me.
Also, since they don't mention it on their page: a common particular kind of inflation that was popularized by the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie is called, "blueberry fic" or denoted with, "blueberry!character name here." You remember that scene where Violet Beauregard eats the three-course dinner gum even though Willy Wonka tells her not to do the thing because it's a prototype and when she gets to the blueberry pie, she starts physically turning into a blueberry? …yeah. that's what blueberry inflation fic is all about. That's it, that's the trope. There's blueberry fic in more fandoms than I care to count, though it's more popular on Deviantart than LJ and… yep. Human blueberries. Or werewolf blueberries. Or Vulcan blueberries, Cardassian blueberries, half-orc blueberries, pastel colored magical talking pony blueberries, LOOK THE POINT HERE IS THAT SOMEONE TURNS INTO A BLUEBERRY PERSON); - domesticity (if you are reading this post, then you are most likely in at least one fandom and I'm going to assume that you don't actually need the concept of domestic fic explained to you because it's pretty much a ubiquitous feature of every single fandom I have ever been in or observed, regardless of how much it fits the source material or not, how appropriate it is or isn't for the involved character(s), etc. Like, Jesus, the freaking NBC Hannibal fandom has domestic fic in it where Will and Hannibal argue about PTA meetings and whether or not Will can pick up milk and bread after work; domestic fic is a tried and true fandom staple across the board. With particular reference to chubby!kink stuff, though, the general idea is usually that the characters settle down into domestic bliss and because they're no longer hunting monsters, fighting Kanimas and hunters and Alpha packs and whatever, on a five-year mission to boldly go where no one has gone before, or otherwise constantly placing themselves in mortal peril on a weekly basis, they get comfortable and happy and at least one person gains weight as a result. There can totally be angst or hurt/comfort or something, to some degree, but overall, schmoop, fluff, and warm fuzzy feelings are the defining staples of domestic chubby!kink fic);
- hurt/comfort, emotions, & all that stuff (as with domestic fic, I'm going to assume that you don't need this genre explained to you. Someone is hurt or sick or whatever; someone else makes it better, genitalia optional; we all know how this goes. With particular reference to chubby!kink, though, some common features of h/c fic include but aren't limited to: characters getting bullied or picked on or verbally abused for their weight, characters being insecure and self-conscious about their weight or their appearance, characters learning to love themselves no matter what they weigh, characters having eating disorders [sometimes they cause the weight gain, such as binge eating disorder; other times, the characters are recovering from one of the eating disorders more commonly associated with weight loss and in the process gain weight and get into chubby!kink stuff; still other times, feeder characters might have weight loss-related eating disorders but still get off on making their partner(s) gain weight; the possibilities here are limitless], characters getting physically injured [sometimes, this leads to weight gain and other times, the two things aren't really related; still other times, the injury is the result of the weight gain or at least exacerbated by it], characters having to cope with how they have a harder time doing things than when they were thinner or with the fact that they outright can't do certain things anymore [like fit on roller-coasters or into airplane seats; the airplane seats example is really common in fic], humiliating sorts of scenarios being played for angst [see the point about humiliation kink], characters reacting to forced or unwanted weight gain, older characters gaining weight when their metabolisms slow down and feeling old and fat and unattractive… and that's just for starters. I could probably still go on. like. don't touch me, don't look at me, I live and breathe hurt/comfort okay, it's my other bulletproof kink in addition to chubby!kink. seriously);
- bears, mixing musculature with fat (…naturally, I mean bears in the gay subculture sense, not in the sense that chubby!kink folks are writing bestiality fic where people have sex with literal bears or AUs where Derek Hale is a werebear instead of a werewolf or whatever. Not that there's anything wrong with said ideas, but… when "bears" gets flung around in chubby!kink circles and discussions, the term usually refers to larger guys who most often have a mix of fat and muscle [like a big beer belly but super-toned arms or similar], and they usually have a lot of body and/or facial hair. Derek Hale is literally a perfect example of a character who would make a really good bear if he porked out a bit, if you imagine him with Tyler Hoechlin's natural chest hair and forearm hair instead of the waxed to all high Hell version that we see on TV);
- fat camp AUs (also fairly self-explanatory: these are fics that are set, in whole or in part, in a fat camp. Sometimes, these are straightforward camps geared toward getting people to lose weight, and this can turn out several different ways, most often, "well okay but the character(s) manage to gain weight anyway" or playing the thing for angst and making the character(s) lose weight only to gain it back later. Other times, though, through some usually hilarious misunderstanding, the parents or guardians who send the chubby character(s) to fat camp end up sending them to a camp dedicated to making the characters gain weight, to predictable results. Some popular variants on the same theme include, "the chubby character(s) are in some kind of weight-related medical program" and, "the chubby character(s) are enrolled in some kind of boarding school that focuses on their weight somehow," and these variants follow the same general rules as fat camp stories with regard to how they usually play out. Also, these stories do not NEED to be AU but they usually are);
- ALL OF THE AUs pretty much (but some common ones include: high school/college AUs, office job AUs, bakery or diner or coffee shop or chef or general food service AUs, and medieval or fairy tale or ABO AUs where it's usually the case that having a fatter partner is seen as a sign of wealth and power and social status because you can afford to keep them well fed, and fatness is socially associated with beauty for those reasons, and there's a lot of emphasis placed on taking care of your partner by making sure that they don't get too skinny);
- feminization (does exactly what it says on the tin, pretty much: fics and fanworks with a focus on how gaining weight makes a character's body more feminine, such as rounding out their hips or making their breasts bigger. This is usually applied to cis dudes, as all things in fandom generally are, but they can also be applied to ladies, binary trans* folks, and non-binary folks regardless of sex. Sometimes, this can also venture into lactation!kink);
- clothes kink (this really doesn't need to be explained, since it's very much the same as clothes kink in the cases of thin characters: there are clothes, the characters wear them, and the fic puts some degree of erotic focus on the emotional, social, cultural, psychological, etc. significance of and baggage attached to the clothes. However, there is also another level here in chubby!kink land, namely: the clothes are usually all kinds of tight and at least a size or two too small for the chubby characters, like… that's the whole point of a focus on clothes kink in a chubby!kink fic, most of the time. Outgrowing clothes, too-tight t-shirts on chubby bellies, too-small jeans cutting into pudgy waistlines, the deep, angry, red marks left behind on someone's flesh from wearing pants or a skirt that are too tight on them, someone's ass and thighs filling out their jeans to the point that the jeans might as well be painted on, trying to do up zippers on things that don't fit [jeans are the most regular offenders here, but dresses work just as well], too-small button-ups straining to hold someone's stomach in and the fabric stretching and pushing the buttons to their absolute limits… and then there's always the idea of the clothes FAILING to stay on someone. Like, buttons popping off-usually with jeans, but also with button-up shirts; there are plenty of button-popping videos with button-up shirts on YouTube, trust me-or ripping the seams of something [ugh, chubby!Scott's bubble butt splitting the back-seam of his jeans in public jesus take the wheel], putting holes in the fabric of shirts because they're stretched too thin around somebody's belly… god, I'm getting hot just thinking about this kink okay it's a personal favorite /gratuitously TMI);
- humiliation kink (THIS KINK IS ANOTHER PERSONAL FAVORITE OH MY GOD I WILL TRY TO RESTRAIN MYSELF BUT I COULD LITERALLY TALK ABOUT HUMILIATION KINK ALL DAY OKAY. …I just. I really really love humiliation kink, okay. I love it in chubby!kink fic especially because chubby!kink is my favorite ever, but I also love it elsewhere, and the big thing that makes humiliation in chubby!kink fic stand out is that while other topics might come up while a character is being humiliated, the focus is pretty much always on the chubby character's weight, their size, their eating habits, their weight gain, their clothes not fitting, and so on and so forth.
Name-calling is a pretty common feature of it, like… fat-ass, tubby, chunky, lard-ass, bubble butt, fatty, piggy, chubby bunny, blubber butt, fatty fatty two-by-four, bloated flabby little land-whale, the names of any overweight celebrity you can think of… if you would use it as an insult for a fat person, it's fair game for humiliation kink. Then there are all the other comments you can make about someone's weight and/or their weight gain: how big and/or fat and/or soft they are, how huge their ass or their stomach or their thighs are, how their cheeks have gotten less defined as their face has filled out, how their clothes don't fit them anymore and it's a miracle that they still fit into anything, how they used to be so thin [or so toned, or so muscular, or so fit, or whatever] and god will you just look at them now, how their eating habits are so terrible for them and god do they really need a fourth slice of cake they already ate so much for dinner, all kinds of concern-trolling about weight gain and the health risks commonly associated with being overweight or obese, tut-tutting over anything and everything… the possibilities are really endless here, since these are some good general ideas but once you drag specific characters and their own specific anxieties and insecurities into things, the field opens up even more.
And that's just the verbal stuff. Non-verbal situations and things have so many more things that you can do to humiliate a character: staring at them, for example, and dragging your eyes all over their body with a Pointed Significant Look; attentively watching them eat with a disapproving look on your face; grabbing at their ass or their belly or their love-handles in public and drawing attention to them; observing them while they weigh themself and/or "helping" them with that and/or taking their measurements yourself; and so on and so forth. Some common locales and scenarios for chubby-related humiliation kink include: doctor's offices or anywhere someone might get weighed in [carnival "guess your weight" games, Weight Watchers meetings, fat camp, etc.], fitting rooms, restaurants or food-related places [especially buffets and bakeries and ice cream parlors and high school or college cafeterias, especially buffet-style dorms, but seriously any place that serves food is good], eating contests, state fairs, picnics, the mall, and high school dances.
THEN there are the situations that don't even require a non-chubby partner to do anything, like… getting stuck in a desk. Breaking a chair or something else due to being too heavy for it. Making a car rock around and creak in protest when the chubby person gets into it. Having to push back their driver's seat because their belly gets wedged up against the steering wheel. Buttons popping off of clothes or seams ripping in public [two common variants of this are either the chubby character unbuttoning their jeans in order to make it easier for them to indulge, or the chubby person refusing to do that and as a consequence they bust their jeans]. Being made to publicly take part in physical activities [ill-fitting gym uniforms optional] and having to feel their thighs chafing together and their flesh bouncing around and jiggling all over and knowing that people are watching them… again, the possibilities are literally limitless here. Humiliation kink, unlike clothes in a chubby!kink fic, is one size fits all.
Now, beyond the common features and manifestations of humiliation kink in chubby fic, there are two major strains of it going on and the differences between them primarily come down to issues of consent: non-consensual humiliation is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, a chubby character getting picked on or bullied or embarrassed by someone [or multiple someones] with the emphasis usually being on things like the loss of control in the situation, and… these situations can also be less outright non-consensual and more accidental, so consent isn't given but they also weren't really intended maliciously so it's sort of thickety and nuanced and complicates? Either way, these situations are often eroticized in fic but played for angst at the same time, emotionally emphasizing things like the chubby character's insecurities or sad emotions about the humiliation; occasionally, however, you'll find a fic where a character's attitude about being non-consensually humiliated is more in the vein of trying to reclaim the situation, in a sense, so they don't outright consent to being humiliated but they get off on people insulting them without it being in a more pre-arranged consensual sort of context.
On the other hand, though, there's consensual humiliation kink, which more closely resembles the way that humiliation kink scenarios play out in real life D/s relationships and scenes, so… the chubby partner wants to play with any of the above-listed features and ideas in a loving and consensual environment and they want the ability to safe-word out, so they ask their partner(s) to humiliate them about their weight and things ensue. However, humiliation kink isn't solely limited to the chubby partner; it is most often applied to the chubby partner because the erotic focus of chubby!kink is on the chubby partner first and foremost, but there's also a lot of potential for humiliating a non-gaining, feeder, and/or chaser partner about how much they're getting off on their partner's weight gain or watching their partner eat or whatever you like… I don't even go here, I just have a lot of feelings, humiliation kink is like catnip to me); - gluttony, indulgence, &/or opulence (…I feel like I'm saying, "this is exactly what it says on the tin" rather a lot in this post, but… seriously. A lot of these kinks are really not that complicated. This particular kink is just a fanwork reveling in the idea of someone "totally letting themself go" and/or the idea of someone or their partner(s) being so wealthy or so powerful that they have access to all kinds of food that the gaining character has never had before and don't have to like, work or anything. If you wrote a fairy tale AU where Prince Derek fell in love with Scott, a poor, beautiful boy who saved his life in the woods while Derek was sadly, shirtlessly running around or something, and then took Scott away to his palace to marry him and Scott is overwhelmed by all the rich, opulent foods that Derek has because he's never had food like this before and due to said foods and due to the fact that Scott doesn't have to work anymore, ensue weight gain and chubby!Scott? that would be a perfect example of this manifestation of chubby!kink);
- mobility issues & immobility (this kink comes into play when someone's weight starts affecting their ability to get around, whether in smaller ways like they get tired out easier, their knees and ankles ache, and/or their weight is distributed in such a way that they waddle, or in larger ways like needing assistance to get around [whether from another person or from something like a cane, walker, wheelchair, etc.] or like being completely immobile. For a lot of people, this is an unwanted dose of reality in their kinky fantasy fics so they prefer to avoid it; for other people, though, these sorts of things become the kink themselves);
- laziness, slobbishness, & sloppiness (this is also pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: in some fics, as the chubby character gains weight and gets fatter, they get increasingly lazy and slovenly in their eating habits, usually ending up covered in food and licking it off their fingers or their lips, and often whining about doing small things for themself because that sounds like a lot of effort and they don't wanna do the thing, their thin partner(s) should do the thing for them);
- weighing & measuring ("numbers kink") (as with many things on this list, this is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: here, the kink is for putting exact numbers on a chubby character's weight and their weight gain. The bare minimum is getting them on a scale, but if you want to go beyond that, there's measuring their waistline and the circumference of their hips, measuring their thighs and biceps, using calipers or other methods to determine what their body fat percentage is, making references to what size clothes they're wearing and what sizes they used to wear… and really dedicated characters will often end up keeping in-story logs of these things. The kink focus here is on the numbers themselves and watching them increase and… numbers kink is great, I like it a lot. It can be in-character [as in the characters getting off on their partner('s)' or their own increasing weights and ballooning waistlines] or it can be in the fic but more there to appeal to the reader, and… in my experience, a lot of readers have a numbers kink, so it's usually a safe bet that, if you put it in a fic, someone will get off on it);
- body worship & specifically belly worship (okay, I know body worship is a really popular kink in fandom to begin with, but it's not as widespread as domestic fic or hurt/comfort so… body worship is fairly straightforward, really, but there are some nuances to it as well. Generally, the idea is just to lavish your partner's body with affection and kiss and touch them all over and grope them and tell them how beautiful they are and how much you love them. Sometimes, it can be focused on specific body parts… like, for instance, bellies, tummies, and stomachs, where you lavish that specific body part with attention and love and groping and whatnot. Belly worship is the go-to for most chubby kink fics that have body worship in them, but there are all kinds of other options, too, like… body worship focused on someone's bubble butt, or body worship focused on someone's plump thighs. As with all the ideas on this list, the sky's the limit, the limit does not exist, etc.);
- unconventional sexual practices & occurrences (well, yes, fat people definitely have sex but their bodies, their weights, and their staminas have a lot of potential to make this different from how thinner people have sex. This opens up a lot of opportunities for interesting sexual encounters like, for example [this is not a comprehensive list]: having to negotiate around people's increased size or different aspects of their bodies, like hanging bellies or larger thighs; sex itself requiring more effort and exertion from the chubby partner(s) so you have to get creative with positions and/or put more work into things, deal with things like heaving breaths and getting sweatier or more tired, more easily; the creation and/or discovery of sensitive and erogenous zones that you didn't know were there before because hey you have more flesh now and it might be more sensitive; the chubby partner, when topping, putting all of their weight into roughly fucking their thinner partner, like using it to put more force behind their thrusts and stuff; fucking someone's belly or their love-handles or their fat rolls in general [it's basically the same concept as frottage, just… rubbing against someone's fat instead of against their genitals]; having to move your flesh or your partner's fat out of the way to get to the genitals; having thicker, softer thighs to maneuver around during intercrural sex; and squashing [take one chubby partner, have them sit on top of their partner who can be thin or chubby, then they bounce and jostle around and pretty much try to knock the wind out of their partner and impose their weight upon their partner, it's… oh god, it's so hot to me you have no idea… well actually, you probably have some idea based on this post so]);
- pregnancy (mpreg, fempreg, & non-binarypreg) (…ahhh yep. you all probably know exactly what this is about, right? well, in a chubby!kink kind of context, it's basically the same thing as it is anywhere else, but there's more emphasis placed on the pregnancy-related weight gain, whether it's the pregnant person's, their partner(s) gaining some kind of sympathy weight, or both; either way, feed(er)ism-related themes and kinks often come up, even though feed(er)ism itself might not actually be invoked by name. Occasionally, you get situations where doctors start tut-tutting about gaining too much weight during pregnancy and multiple baby pregnancies are very common);
- bodily comparisons & differences ("size difference kink") (this is another kink that's pretty common, or at least not unheard of, in fandom to begin with but it has particular connotations in chubby!kink circles. In most of fandom, size difference refers to things like… the fact that Isaac Lahey is like four or five inches taller than Scott McCall, or the fact that Derek Hale is like two hundred and ten pounds of ripped up muscle while Stiles Stilinski is a hundred and forty-seven pounds of pale skin and fragile bone. These things aren't exactly mutually exclusive with what size difference kink means in chubby kink fics, but because of chubby kink's erotic focus on, well, chubbiness, the nature of the difference is more often, "Character A is chubby and weighs significantly more than their thinner partner, Character B, discuss the juxtaposition of their bodies, such as Character A squashing or grinding on Character B and it being more of a sensation of pleasure/pain for Character B because of the weight difference, the feeling of Character A's flab pressing into Character B's skinny limbs or muscles or whatever body type Character B has, etc." …personally, I really like pairings where Character A is like, upwards of 250-ish pounds and Character B is closer to 150-ish or maybe even less, like… maybe it's my numbers kink or something but there is just absolute magic in the whole hundred pound weight difference, and in a Scott/chubby!Derek fic I'm working on right now, there's actually about a hundred and twenty, a hundred and twenty-five pounds of difference between them because Scott weighs in at about one-sixty while Derek's up to two-eighty-five-ish and just… ugh, I love size difference kink, oh my god);
- animal transformations & Alpha/Beta/Omega stuff (…I actually don't know what the connection is between these kinks and chubby!kink in general beyond, "well, the Supernatural fandom is a very strange place and if it is at all possible to have a kink for something, you can bet that at least two people probably do" but as for how they tend to manifest in chubby!kink fics… well. Animal transformations usually involve animals that are associated with fatness, like pigs and cows, and partial animal transformations are particularly common, especially fic where cis dudes end up with udders. as for ABO stuff, it basically plays out exactly as it does with thin characters but… the characters aren't thin. like, that's it. that's the major difference. A common ABO trope with chubby!kink fics is the whole, "a well-loved Omega/Beta is a fat Omega/Beta" idea where Alphas are socially and culturally encouraged to be feeders and fatten up their Omega or Beta partners because a fat Omega or Beta is clearly loved and provided for);
- and belly rubs (…this is probably the thing that needs the least amount of explanation, since… belly rubs. Fairly self-explanatory. Usually, they crop up as a way to make someone feel better after they've eaten too much).
So… that's it. That's the post. That's my taxonomy of chubby!kink and several of its different manifestations (though I am pretty sure that, even with being as ridiculously thorough as I am, I missed a LOT of stuff that's out there to be enjoyed and written about). That is my primer on what chubby!kink is and what it does.
It's not everybody's thing (a lot of people I've talked to have actually never heard about it before hearing about it from me), it's sort of tetchy territory a little because the kink itself and a lot of the popular manifestations of it can be rather triggering for some people (which, as someone who's both fat and dealt with an eating disorder and body image issues, I totally understand), and I honestly couldn't really tell you why it does it for me-like, I have some ideas because I love to navel gaze about my kinks and why I have them and what about them in particular gets me off and basically why is thing-but… it's my thing and I really love it a lot.
