tableSummary: The sign changes...
Draco Malfoy walked through the densely falling snow, practically running. He could see her blond head fleeing from him. Her pace was steady and slow, as if she both enjoyed being chased as well as enjoyed the horrid weather.
"Luna!" Draco yelled, hoping in vain she would stop at the sound of her name - or his voice. But she kept walking and didn't look back.
Quickening his stride, he began to ran, weaving through the crowd easily. She kept getting closer, her pace never increasing to maintain their distance. "Luna!" he called again, feeling anxious that he'd suddenly lose sight of her and lose her.
She didn't turn, but she stopped at the corner, waiting for the crosswalk to change to allow her to cross. Right as the sign changed, he reached her, grasping her wrist to prevent her from moving away.
"Luna," he whispered, pulling her closer and wrapping his arms around her.
She was stiff in arms, and he almost let her go. He didn't know how to make up for the hurtful things he had said and worse, the cold ways he had said them. But he knew he had to try. Watching her leave his flat had been heart wrenching and pushed him into realizing what she truly did mean to him.
"Luna, I'm sorry," he said humbly and honestly. Two qualities a Malfoy's words never had before.
She remained still, not showing an outward reaction to his apology.
"I said I'm sorry," he repeated, growing agitated. She could at least acknowledge his words. Suddenly he realized that she was acting like a Malfoy. She was being cold and distant. "Don't be like me," he whispered abruptly, feeling vulnerable and hating it.
She pulled out of his arms finally, turning to look at him with cool grey eyes. "I'm not."
"You're cold and distant."
"You're mean and unloving."
He nodded slowly. "I am, but you still stayed."
"No, I left," Luna pointed out coldly. Her eyes didn't change; they remained cool and unfeeling, like this whole situation was beyond her or perhaps beneath her.
"Only after-"
"After you told me I was nothing? Yes, after that."
"After I lied."
She paused, her expression changing. She looked amused now. "A Malfoy lie? How unbecoming," she suddenly teased, a smile gracing her face. She backed away from him, staring at him in the eyes. "I have to go."
"I'll owl you," he warned, his tone threatening.
She nodded. "You better."
The crosswalk's sign changed to walk again and she crossed the street, leaving him behind. Again, when she walked away, she didn't look back; instead her eyes remained forward as if she was heading to somewhere with purpose and determination.
