Luna Lovegood had never killed. Besides during the war, she had never raised her wand in a defensive gesture.
Now her back was pressed against the wall and shouts was around her, clouding her thoughts. Her heart pounded in her chest and her head felt like it was spinning. Her legs shook beneath her, bringing her attention to the fact her entire body was shaking. The fear wasn't almost numbing.
She can been walking with Draco Malfoy, heading for their favorite coffee shop for an informal date, and he had promptly thrown her against the wall, tossing his invisibility cloak over her. It was like he had been prepared for danger. Perhaps he smelled it in the air as he walked or he was just sensitive to a dangerous atmosphere after all these years of hiding and escaping death while he had lived the life of a pariah.
Draco was calm, practically ignoring the other man's - his enemy's - radiating danger. Luna searched for his enemy's - their enemy's - name. It hit her like a ton of bricks. Theodore Nott. Screams of hatred and insults filled the air. Theodore was accusing Draco was betraying Lord Voldemort which was not something Luna expected to hear. She had been present during confrontations with those who thought Draco was a bastard for involvement with Lord Voldemort during the war, but this? This was a new reason for hatred.
When Theodore raised his wand at Draco, she felt her heart stop for a moment before a crystallized awareness washed over her. Underneath the cloak, unknown the enemy, she raised her wand, ready to protect Draco if need be and whether Draco wanted her to or not.
The enemy was ready to kill him in cold blood, but she wouldn't watch him die. She had seen enough senseless deaths in the war and the scene wasn't about to be repeated now. On guard, she watched Draco try to talk to his enemy calmly.
It didn't work. A lethal look was in Theodore's eyes and it wasn't going away. His deadly intent was clear.
"D-" Luna started to cry, but stopped. If she called attention to herself now Draco would never forgive her. He had been protecting her, shielding from his enemy's attention. She hated not being able to protect him in the same way.
Theodore changed. His anger was still evident and unfading, but his eyes head a newfound conscious, as if wanting to murder someone in cold blood calmed his anger so he could think clearly.
Draco moved slightly, moving away from her yet more directly in front of her like he could still see her there. He was still trying to protect her. Luna realized his chivalrous nature would get him killed sooner. The act of protecting her was simple, but Luna felt her chest warm.
There was no way she'd Draco die before her eyes. Not when was trying to protect her when his life was actually the one in danger.
Theodore suddenly went into a rage, screaming insults and words about who Draco would have read his eulogy at his upcoming funeral. Luna felt a pang of anger at the words. Thedore was mocking Draco. She wished she could see Draco's face now. He had to be showing his anger. If he wasn't then he'd clearly was utilizing his many years of upbringing that had taught him to cover his emotions, and that might work in his benefit.
When Theodore drew deathly quiet, she moved out from behind Draco so she got a clear shot of Theodore and said the curse first, a green light exploding from the end of her wand. The sight sent a shiver of fear and hate down her spine. It brought back too many hard memories. She collapsed against the wall, her legs folding beneath her.
Draco swung around when Theodore crumpled to the ground, lifeless in the glow of the green light that the invisibility cloak didn't cover. She pulled the cloak off, dropping it to the ground beside her. She was still shaking and she could barely meet his eyes. Her gaze was cast to the ground, ashamed but not regretful of her choice to protect Draco and take Theodore Nott's life.
"You… You killed him," Draco croaked, looking at her in disbelief. There was underlining warmth in his gaze, and perhaps a bit of uncharacteristic gratitude. When she didn't respond, he knelt down in front of her and his fingers gently lifted her chin so her eyes met his. "Why did you do it? I would have been fine."
"Draco!" Luna cried suddenly, propelling herself at him. He wrapped them around her. Her face buried in his shoulder, tears began to run escape and her body just wouldn't stop shaking even in his strong arms. "Draco, you wouldn't have been okay!"
"I would have been. Luna, I've been… This isn't the first time someone had threatened my life," Draco replied calmly.
"I wasn't going to let the man kill you in front of me!"
Pulling back, he kissed her forehead and smiled softly down at her. "I don't know what to say to that," he replied softly, his voice full of emotion he was obviously trying to hide. "You killed for me. How do I… live with causing you to kill?"
"You didn't make me kill, Draco. It's my choice. And I chose not to loose you," she whispered before she pulled back and leaned up to kiss him. The kiss was hot and intense. Luna and Draco both had strong emotions running through their body that they transferred into the kiss. "I love you," she whispered when the finally pulled apart, glancing down with her confession. She didn't want to see the rejection in his eyes.
"I'd be a fool and a liar to not say I love you too."
Her gaze snapped up, surprised. "What?"
"Luna Lovegood, I love you." He stood up, releasing her. "Come on. This shouldn't ruin our evening."
