Glee

So, usually I like Glee.  Even when they're heavy-handed with their messages and what-not, it's a fun show.

(Sorry if this comes off a bit ranty, but I took it a little too personally)

Last night's episode was the first one I've turned off and left. )

I don't think the religious understand how profoundly uncomfortable is for a non-believer to be bludgeoned with it.

EXACTLY. My family, and their church family, have constantly bombarded me with prayers and whenever anything works out, they automatically start telling me how much they've been praying for me and how great it is that God answers prayers. A friend of mine once said, "It's like wishing for something really hard, then taking credit for it when it comes true."

The episode last night made me really uncomfortable, but what I did like about it was that Kurt remained true to his own beliefs and didn't let the others change his mind--even though they tried REALLY hard. And in the end, no one ended up having the right answer. I just think the show would benefit from less songs (Rachel's was the worst) and more depth.

I hate that too, because what do you say? They're sincere, so you don't want to be sarcastic, but... I think generally I smile awkwardly and try to change the subject...

That's exactly what praying is like, for me. I have a friend who prays, and requests prayers, for EVERYTHING. "I have a math test, pray for me!" I'm like "how about I buy you a study guide?" Frankly I think God's got bigger fish to fry than whether or not you pass math.

And yeah, the show could nix a couple of musical numbers and have better character moments; I don't think anyone would mind. Sue's scene with Emma was my favorite of the episode, honestly.

I still see God as, like the guy in charge of Civ... or Black and White or something. Set up the initial conditions, and Play. Go forth and see what happens. It's a good way to explain why babies die, and why crap happens to good people.

That I could see far more readily than a God who cares if you pass a class.

In my mind, if there is a God, He's flawed. Like Zeus--there's a guy I could worship. Unlimited power, but a weakness for the ladies. So maybe God has ADD or something. Maybe he likes to get drunk and pull out one of the old Biblical plagues from time to time. Maybe he's just frustrated that so many people have fucked up and/or abuse His Word.

The writing on that whole episode was so wonky and forced. :/

Very. Every now and then Glee just goes "TROPE!" or "SERIES OF TROPES!" with, you know, songs thrown in higgeldy-piggeldy.

They COULD have had an actual episode about religion, or about dealing with a parent being sick, or whatever. Instead they just groped around seemingly at random until there was an episode in the can :(

I felt that way about the Spears episode. What was the point? Other than to reproduced a bunch of Britney Spears videos. This stunt casting is becoming a bane.

Yeah, I think Glee's gotten a little too successful for it's own good. We like the songs, but we like the CHARACTERS, too. Don't forget about them!

While I thought Heather Morris was AMAZING in the Spears episode, Britney Spears was in it for, what, like, a minute? And for no good reason. *sigh*

Yeah, this was the first time I fast forwarded through songs.

I would have loved to have been in that church after Mercedes got done with her song (which I fast forwarded through) and everyone was all happy and glowy. Wait for that split second of silence and then yell "Now tell them he's gay!" and see what the reaction of the congregation would have been.

But the whole Grilled Cheesus bit was hilarious!

It just pisses me off that Kurt's choice not to believe is seen as less valid than everyone else's faith.

ESPECIALLY when a good many of those faiths would have "hated the sin" if not the sinner, since he's gay. UGH.

And yeah, Grilled Cheesus trended for, like, 2 days on Twitter LOL
