Engaged

Luke proposed to me this evening at twilight.

I said yes. Of course. :)

We had a picnic at Karori cemetery, which was amazing in and of itself. We sat under a tree that had 4 tuis feeding and singing in a pohutakawa tree. ALL the pohutakawas were full of tuis calling through the valley.

There were also goldfinches, starlings, wood pigeons, blackbirds, magpies, fantails and crimson rosellas in attendance. But the stars of the show were the flock of kaka (a native, north island parrot) who joined us, one within seeing distance. They sang and sang and sang. It was one of those amazing perfect moments, a windless night in Wellington, only the faintest glow of a setting sun kissing the tallest peak, these amazing birds and these very special parrots making a visit.

That's when Luke got down off one knee, took the ring off my hand that he'd bought for me in America 4 years ago, and asked me to marry him.

I said yes, and he gave me back my ring - a simple silver band he bought for me in Ashland, Oregon.

At that moment, his brother rang. This is funny as we're going to his wedding in a few weeks, but funnier because Geoff and Luke have this 'twin thing' that involves them being in constant contact on cell phone - with Geoff often texting/calling at inappropriate moments. So Luke picked up the phone and tersely said 'You just interrupted my proposal'. Geoff made his apologies and said farewell. Predictably, both our phones went 'bleep' as he texted his congratulations. Very funny to me, and actually makes it more special.

We walked out of the cemetery in the dark, arm in arm, grinning broadly while the kaka and tuis sang their goodnight.

The proposal wasn't planned. It was a spur of the moment, and utterly perfect and heartfelt expression of love, done in a style so fitting with everything Luke and I cherish - nature, birds, tranquility, cemeteries, togetherness, companionship, conversations with each-other ...

We'll get married on Halloween which is our current anniversary. Not sure what year though.

:D

Happy days!
