Thanks to everyone who provided input into this piece, including the folks at mibbit's #GSD_Fandom and my fellow drunk artists.

During my hike to the town of Caerleon, I visited the Ffwrrwm, which is a small specialist shopping courtyard with an eclectic display of sculptures. It was completely deserted of people when I was there, so I took my time and did some exploring. I found a tree trunk that was carved to look like Merlin, and in his lap was a piece of paper.

On that paper was this poem:


Merlin

Welsh as rain
yet rare as rainbows.
Raw like pain.
Shaped by God knows.
Sightings strange as Vikings.

Wedded to wood.
Finds mettle in the minds of men.
Part evil and part good.
Ready to tip the balance when
Might might overcome Right.

Wonder immersed in Magic.
Chief conjuror of charms.
This wanderer, well wisher, quick
to keep us from all harms
plants Arthur in our word chants.
