Alienation and Random Areas

Egypt is rapidly changing. In the West, scenes of Middle Eastern cities often look the same (except Dubai), because they're so different they're outside our frame of comparison. But Arab society is in a transition that produces some really awkward situations - like the sudden explosion of huge slum areas on the outskirts of many cities.

"The older ones aren’t even shanty towns anymore": And these people don't own the land where they live so they can be swept out at any time, thus perpetuating their poverty.

Fascinating: "Cairo slums are generally not hot-beds of crime. Vice, yes, but not violence. in the Cairo most of the people moving in come from just a few parts of the countryside, where Bedouin rules still apply."
