Should I buy a tv?

And get cable, probably. I get bored a lot and that doesn't help the whole depression thing. Reading is hard. TV is bad, in the sense that I just sit there, but it seems that I don't know how to get out of the house. (Though being bored definitely pushes me in that direction ( Read more... )

In general I like TV. Like any drug it can be used to excess. If getting out of the house is important to your physical|mental health, it might not be a good idea. For people with problems being social, one of the worst aspects of TV is the scheduling - don't let network executives own your schedule. If you do get a TV, use it for DVDs or get TiVo or something, but try not to ever watch live TV.

Solving the larger problem, consider keeping a discipline of always being signed up for some continuing-ed class: cooking, museum walks, language, whatever. Get things on your schedule.

Start with hulu. It probably has most of what you want to watch anyway. If that goes well, think about a TV.

As far as learning how to be alone... you have to live with yourself for the rest of your life. You really aren't going to be ready to live with someone else till you are ready to live with yourself. That's the way it worked for me, anyway.

Escapism doesn't work so well for me. You are really smart-so I suspect that the pure stupidity of TV won't work that well for you either. With Netflix, I watched on my computer, but ran out of stuff I considered watchable. Then I watched a ton of Tedtalks. TV fills the gaps but there's so much junk and TV doesn't keep working for me.
I am the oldest of six kids, which kinda set the stage for finding chaos OK and being alone has never been easy for me. I used to read just so that I could dissolve into the story and everything else faded away. Doing physical things (like pounding metal) gives me sufficient distraction makes loneliness easier to not focus on, for instance, "do not hit/bruise/crush thumb/hands" can be pretty attention holding, add more tools for greater need for focus.

I agree, if you are worried about getting out more, a TV is probably not a good idea. I have one (no cable) and since moving down here and having fewer commitments due to the end of library school, I am watching more than I used to. Sometimes I'm not sure how I think about that.

Maybe just try Netflix and Hulu? I am glad to check my account and see if I can send you a Netflix free trial.

Have you tried looking into MeetUp?
