I think many books from this era were published as serials in magazines and the author was paid by the word. (Wikipedia concurs that Musketeers was serialized.) Rambling subplots with new characters and no obvious point meant extra money. What's so great about it? All the snicker-snack of the swords makes for great movies. (swords? sabres? epees? I can't remember...)

Is it rare for creators of iconic characters to be lauded even if what they create is not great literature? The Sherlock Holmes character is much better than the stories.

The only other Dumas book I have read is Count of Monte Cristo, which at least, as I remember it, has a sensible beginning, middle, and end.

You MUST make the time to visit the City Museum in St. Louis. It is one of the coolest places I have ever been. Wear clothes suitable for tunnel-crawling.
