I've had much better experiences with the original Addis in the South End. I went to the Porter one when it opened and was similarly disappointed, but I chalked it up to growing pains. Sorry to hear it hasn't gotten better.

I liked the food at Asmara in Central Square, but the chopped-onion gas coming out from the kitchen was so strong that everyone at the table was crying.

I've also heard good things about Lucy's.

I had a good first experience at the Porter Addis Red Sea shortly after it opened, but have been increasingly disappointed since then. I think I too am now in the "won't go back" camp.

Asmara in Central Square is good. I've never experienced the chopped-onion gas -- just good food and friendly service.
